The short answer

You can get paid to study teaching in three ways: the Commonwealth Prac Payment ($338.60 a week of placement in 2026), scholarships such as the Commonwealth Teaching Scholarship (up to $40,000) and NSW's Teacher Education Scholarship ($7,500 a year plus $6,000), and employment-based degrees where a school pays you a wage while you train.

  • Almost every scholarship comes with a teaching service obligation in public schools.
  • Most payments are taxable, but students often earn under the tax-free threshold.
  • NSW's teach.Rural Scholarship can be worth over $90,000 across a 4-year degree.
  • Victoria's big Secondary Teaching Scholarships are closed; Teach the Future Fellowships ($10,000) replaced them for some students.

What your payslip should show

PAYG withheld each fortnight should be about $780 (ATO Scale 2, tax-free threshold claimed). Small differences come from rounding and 27-pay years. Your marginal rate is 32% including Medicare, so each extra $1,000 of salary adds about $680 to take-home.

Estimates for an Australian resident for 2026–27 who claims the tax-free threshold, with no other income, no dependants and private hospital cover not required. Medicare levy uses the 2025–26 low-income thresholds (2026–27 not yet published). The Commonwealth Prac Payment: paid placement weeks

Since 1 July 2025 the Australian Government has paid eligible students during mandatory placements. In 2026 it's $338.60 a week, set at the single Austudy rate and indexed each 1 January (it was $331.65 in 2025). You need to be a domestic student in a Commonwealth supported place in an entry-to-practice teaching degree, on a placement that averages 30 hours a week or more, and you're means-tested unless you already get income support. You apply through your university.

Worked example

What the Prac Payment is worth over a degree (2026 rate)

Master of Teaching, 60 placement days (12 weeks)
12 x $338.60 = $4,063.20
Bachelor of Education, 80 placement days (16 weeks)
16 x $338.60 = $5,417.60
Typical total About $4,000 to $5,400

Many degrees have more than the minimum days, which pays more. Full detail in our Prac Payment guide.

Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships

The national scholarship pays $10,000 a year of full-time study, capped at $40,000 for an undergraduate degree or $20,000 for a postgraduate degree, plus $2,000 if you do your final-year placement in a remote or very remote school. In return you teach in government schools or government early learning for a period matching your degree length, within 10 years of your expected graduation. There is no $12,500 remote bonus, whatever some websites say. Round dates and eligibility for 2027 starters are in our Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships guide.

NSW: the most generous state scholarships

NSW runs three Teacher Education Scholarship programs for students starting or continuing a teaching degree in 2027: the general scholarship, an Aboriginal stream (which also covers primary teaching), and teach.Rural. The general scholarship targets secondary maths, science (including chemistry or physics), technological and applied studies, and K-12 inclusive or special education. Payments are taxable, paid twice a year once your enrolment and results are confirmed, and pro rata at $937.50 per subject if you take fewer than eight subjects a year.

Worked example

teach.Rural scholar in a 4-year Bachelor of Education (maximum value)

Course contribution payments (credit or better in each unit)
Up to $50,000
Training allowance (4 x $7,500)
$30,000
Appointment allowance
$6,000
Rural practicum allowance ($500 a week)
Up to $5,000
Maximum before tax $91,000

Upper limits as published by Teach.NSW. All amounts are subject to tax. You must accept a permanent rural or remote NSW public school role on completion. Details: NSW teacher education scholarships.

Victoria: fellowships, placement grants and paid degrees

Victoria's large Secondary Teaching Scholarships, which aimed to cover study costs equal to standard HELP fees, were only for students enrolled in 2024 and 2025 and are now closed. The current offers are smaller or employment-based: Teach the Future Fellowships ($10,000 for 200 undergraduates in STEM, EAL or special education in 2026), placement grants of $100 to $200 a day at eligible schools, and Teach Today and Teach Tomorrow, which put up to 1,200 student teachers into paid school roles while they complete an 18 to 24-month degree. See Victorian teaching scholarships.

If you already have a degree and can't afford to stop earning, an employment-based pathway may beat any scholarship. You're employed by a school (often as a paraprofessional or under a permission to teach) while you study. National programs include Teach For Australia and La Trobe's Nexus; NSW, Victoria and Queensland run their own. What you're paid while training depends on the employer: Queensland's official schedule pays Band 1 Step 1 (interns and permission-to-teach staff) $80,615 full-time from September 2026, against $90,164 for a 4-year-trained graduate. Compare programs in employment-based teaching pathways.

Tax on scholarships and payments

NSW states plainly that its training and appointment allowances are taxable and must be declared, and that tax and HECS-HELP repayments may be withheld from them. Treat other cash scholarships the same way unless the provider tells you otherwise. The good news is that most full-time students earn little else, so the tax is often small.

How to stack payments without breaking a rule

A sensible order

  1. 1

    Secure a Commonwealth supported place

Everything else is worth less if you're paying full fee. See Master of Teaching cost.

  2. 2

    Apply for the Prac Payment

It isn't competitive. If you qualify, you get it for every eligible placement.

  3. 3

Pick one service obligation you can live with

Commonwealth and state scholarships both tie you to public schools. Make sure the locations and years fit your plans.

  4. 4

Check the stacking rules in writing

NSW awards only one of its own scholarships per person. Ask about combining with Commonwealth support before you sign.

  5. 5

    Budget for placement blocks

Even with every payment, placement weeks are the tightest. Save before each block.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get paid to study teaching in Australia?
Yes. Eligible students get the Commonwealth Prac Payment of $338.60 a week during placement in 2026, many can win scholarships of $7,500 to $10,000 a year, and employment-based programs pay you a school wage while you train.
How much is the teaching scholarship in Australia?
The Commonwealth Teaching Scholarship pays $10,000 a year, up to $40,000 for an undergraduate degree or $20,000 for a postgraduate degree, plus $2,000 for a remote final placement.
Do teaching scholarships have to be paid back?
Only if you don't meet the conditions. NSW, for example, says you repay the gross amount received if you withdraw or breach the agreement. The Commonwealth scholarship requires government school service.
Are teaching scholarships taxable?
NSW's are: its $7,500 training allowance and $6,000 appointment allowance must be declared as assessable income. Check each provider's terms; many students still pay little tax because their total income is low.
Is the Prac Payment means-tested?
Yes. It's means-tested unless you already receive a qualifying income support payment, and it's only for domestic students in Commonwealth supported places.
What is the best paid pathway into teaching?
It depends on your situation. Graduates who can't stop working often do best in an employment-based program such as Nexus or Teach For Australia; school leavers usually gain most from a scholarship plus the Prac Payment.
Are Victoria's secondary teaching scholarships still open?
No. They applied only to students enrolled in 2024 and 2025. Victoria now offers Teach the Future Fellowships, placement grants and paid employment-based degrees.
