School support staff pay in every state

Teacher aides, learning support officers, education support, school services officers and school admin: current pay in every state, checked against the agreement.

Teacher aides, learning support officers, education support staff, school services officers and school admin teams keep schools running, but their pay is far harder to find than teachers'. Every state uses different titles and classifications: an SLSO in NSW, Education Support in Victoria, a teacher aide in Queensland, an education assistant in WA, an SSO in South Australia.

Most support roles are paid by the hour on a classification scale, and many are employed for school terms only, so annual income depends on hours and whether pay is spread across the year. These pages set out each state's current rates from its agreement, with dates, and explain how term-time pay works.

Use the support staff pay calculator to turn a level and hours into fortnightly take-home pay.

Frequently asked questions

How much do teacher aides earn in Australia?
It depends on the state, classification and hours. Most government school teacher aides and learning support officers are paid an hourly rate on a classification scale; see your state's page for the current rates and how term-time pay is calculated.
Are teacher aides paid during school holidays?
It depends on the employment arrangement. Some support staff are employed for school terms only and paid for those weeks, while others have pay averaged across the year. Your contract or the agreement will say which applies.
Do I need a qualification to be a teacher aide?
Requirements vary by state and school. Many employers prefer a Certificate III or IV in School Based Education Support, and every role needs a working with children check.
