The short answer

Tasmanian government teachers earn $74,869 to $122,393 on the 13-level Band 1 scale from March 2026. Most graduates start at Level 5 on $85,313, or Level 8 on $99,010 in an isolated school. Pay rises 3% in March 2027 and 2.75% in March 2028 under the Teachers Agreement 2025.

Tasmania pays its public school teachers on one long scale, Band 1, with 13 levels. Where you start depends on how many years of teacher training you have, and you move up one level a year. The rates below are from DECYP's Salary Scales as at 27 August 2026, which include the 3% rise paid from the first full pay period in March 2026.

The scale comes from the Teachers Agreement 2025, which AEU members accepted in April 2026 after the first 24-hour teacher strikes in a generation. It runs to 19 September 2028, so the next two rises are already locked in.

What your payslip should show

PAYG withheld each fortnight should be about $686 (ATO Scale 2, tax-free threshold claimed). Small differences come from rounding and 27-pay years. Your marginal rate is 32% including Medicare, so each extra $1,000 of salary adds about $680 to take-home.

Estimates for an Australian resident for 2026–27 who claims the tax-free threshold, with no other income, no dependants and private hospital cover not required. Medicare levy uses the 2025–26 low-income thresholds (2026–27 not yet published). Pay data: Teachers Agreement 2025, verified 16 October 2026.

How the Band 1 scale works

Band 1 covers every classroom teacher, from Level 1 ($74,869) to Level 13 ($122,393). Your entry level is set by your training, not by the school you are appointed to (with one exception, isolated schools). The table above shows the current rate for every level, the rate before March 2026 and our calculated March 2027 figure.

Where you start on Band 1
Your trainingEntry levelSalary from March 2026
Uncertificated, 2- or 3-year trainedLevel 1$74,869
4-year trained (DECYP entry point)Level 4$81,762
Usual graduate start / 5-year trainedLevel 5$85,313
Graduate appointed to an isolated schoolLevel 8$99,010

DECYP's employment page says the usual beginning salary is Band 1 Level 5. Uncertificated and 2-year trained teachers top out at Level 7.

Progression: from graduate to the top

You move up one level for each year of service. From the usual Level 5 start that is 8 years to Level 13. Two rules slow some teachers down: in the 3-year trained and transition streams, Levels 9 and 10 each take two years, and you can only move to Level 13 once you have full TRB registration and 12 months at Level 12.

A typical path for a Level 5 graduate

  1. 1

    Year 1: Level 5, $85,313

Provisionally registered with the TRB. Full-time beginning teachers get 4 hours a fortnight release time and a 4-day paid induction before Term 1.

  2. 2

    Year 2: Level 6, $89,651

Release time drops to 2 hours a fortnight. Start gathering evidence for full registration.

  3. 3

    Years 3-7: Levels 7 to 11

One level a year, reaching $114,307 at Level 11.

  4. 4

    Year 8: Level 12, then Level 13

After 12 months at Level 12 ($119,989) and with full registration, you move to Level 13, $122,393.

Above Band 1: Advanced Skills Teacher and leadership

Tasmania does not pay a separate HALT step on top of Band 1. The next classroom classification is Advanced Skills Teacher (Band 2 Level 3) at $129,640. Above that come Assistant Principal at $143,334, Deputy Principal at $151,590 and Principal Levels 1 to 6, from $151,590 to $211,264. See the Advanced Skills Teacher page for how it compares with HALT pay in other states.

What changes next

  • March 2027: 3% from the first full pay period in March. Our calculation puts Level 5 at $87,872 and Level 13 at $126,065.
  • March 2028: 2.75%. Rough estimate: Level 5 about $90,288 and Level 13 about $129,532.
  • 19 September 2028: the agreement reaches its end date, and bargaining for the next one will start before then.

How Tasmania compares with other states

Tasmania sits near the bottom on headline pay. From October 2026, a NSW graduate earns $92,882 and tops out at $133,422, and the NT pays $96,180 rising to $136,997. Tasmania's $85,313 graduate rate and $122,393 top are below both. The gap narrows if you start at Level 8 in an isolated school, and Tasmania's scale has more levels, so steady increments continue for longer. Catholic and independent schools

Catholic Education Tasmania has its own agreement. A 2026 CET job ad listed $72,688 to $118,328, which is the government scale before the March 2026 rise; we could not confirm whether CET has passed on the 3%. Independent schools set their own rates. See Catholic school teacher pay in Tasmania.

How to check your level and pay

Five quick checks

  • Find your classification on your payslip (for example Band 1 Level 6) and match it to the table above.
  • Divide your gross fortnightly pay by your FTE, multiply by 26, and compare it with the annual rate.
  • Check your increment date: you should move up a level each year of service.
  • If you are at Level 12, confirm your TRB registration is full, not provisional, before your 12 months are up.
  • In an isolated school, check you were appointed at Level 8 or higher and are receiving any retention payments.
