Frequently asked questions

Are teachers getting a pay rise in 2026?
Yes, in most states. Each state sets its own increase and date; see the table for the latest rise and the next one scheduled or proposed in every state.
When is the next teacher pay rise in my state?
Check your state's row above, then its pay rise page for the detail. NSW's next rise depends on a new award after October 2027; Victoria's depends on Fair Work approval of VGSA 2026; Queensland's on the QIRC arbitration.
Will I get back pay?
It depends on the deal. Many agreements backdate rises to an operative date and pay the difference as a lump sum; others don't. Our back pay calculator works out what you'd get and the tax on it.
How is back pay taxed?
Your employer withholds tax on back pay using a special ATO method that spreads it, rather than treating it as one huge fortnight. At tax time it's taxed at your marginal rate; arrears from earlier years may qualify for a tax offset.
Do Catholic and independent school teachers get the same rise?
Not automatically. Catholic and independent schools have their own agreements. Catholic systemic rates often follow the government rates, but timing and amounts can differ.
