The short answer
Northern Territory government teachers get employer super at the 12% Superannuation Guarantee rate, with choice of fund. There is no extra employer top-up, but NT salaries are the highest in Australia, so 12% of a CT9 salary ($136,997) is about $16,440 a year. The Remote Incentive Allowance counts as salary, so remote teachers get super on that too.
Clause 35.2 of the NT Public Sector Educators' 2024-2027 Enterprise Agreement sets employer super at the Superannuation Guarantee minimum, which is 12% in 2026-27, up to the maximum contribution base. That is lower than the ACT (12.5% to 13.5%), but it is calculated on the country's highest teacher salaries.
Employer super at every NT pay step
Employer contributions at the Superannuation Guarantee rate (12%) up to the maximum contribution base (cl. 35.2). Defined-benefit members get contributions under their scheme rules and cannot be appointed to PLO4-PLO7 unless the Commissioner decides otherwise (cl. 37.6(d)).
What 12% is worth in the NT
Our arithmetic. The Remote Incentive Allowance is paid fortnightly and counts as salary for super under the EA. Salaries rise another 4.3% from the first full pay period on or after 1 January 2027.
Choice of fund and the old NT schemes
- Choice of fund: nominate any complying fund. If you don't, your existing stapled fund or the employer's default MySuper fund is used. The EA doesn't name the default fund, so ask payroll if it matters to you.
- Legacy defined-benefit schemes: NTGPASS, NTSSS and the Commonwealth CSS are all closed to new members. Existing members are paid under their scheme rules.
- A quirk for defined-benefit members: under clause 37.6(d) they can't be appointed to principal levels PLO4 to PLO7 unless the Commissioner decides otherwise. If you're in one of these schemes and aiming for a senior principal job, raise it early.
- Payday Super: since 1 July 2026 super must be paid with each fortnightly pay. Check that your fund shows regular deposits.
Salary sacrifice at the top of the NT scale
At CT9 ($136,997) you are just over the $135,000 threshold where the tax rate jumps to 37% (39% with Medicare). That makes salary sacrifice more efficient for top-of-scale NT teachers than for most teachers elsewhere.

The concessional cap is $32,500 in 2026-27, including your employer's 12%. Unused cap from earlier years may be available if your balance was under $500,000 on 30 June 2026; check myGov before relying on it. Division 293 tax only applies above $250,000 of income plus concessional contributions, which classroom teachers and non-contract principals won't reach; only the best-paid executive contract principals might come close.
