The short answer
AITSL says most assessment-ready applications are completed within 4 weeks, and some take up to 6 weeks. On 16 October 2026 it was assessing applications received in the week of 5 October 2026, so the queue was running at about the advertised speed. Missing or incorrect documents add time, and AITSL doesn't answer status requests by phone or email.
- The clock that matters starts when your application is complete, not when you pay.
- Times can stretch when application numbers rise sharply.
- AITSL is only one step: plan 6 to 12 months for the whole move.
- The $1,198 fee can be partly refunded ($982) only before assessment starts.

Applications received
AITSL publishes the week of applications it's currently working on, which is the most useful number on its site. If you submit today and that week is about two weeks behind, you can expect your file to be picked up in roughly two weeks, then decided soon after, assuming nothing is missing. AITSL warns that its timeframes may be extended if application numbers rise significantly, so check the page again on the day you submit.

What this means
With 5 years of experience, you'd likely start around Step 6 in New South Wales, earning $124,696 and taking home about $3,626 a fortnight. Your UK pay of £38,000 works out at roughly $2,151 a fortnight after tax, NI and pension at this exchange rate, so you'd be about $1,475 a fortnight better off in cash terms. The best take-home at your experience is in New South Wales ($3,626).
Australian employers pay super on top of salary (12% in NSW), whereas your UK pension contribution comes out of your pay. The Teachers' Pension is a defined-benefit scheme, so the two aren't directly comparable. Your starting step is set by the employer when they assess your service; we assume each year of experience counts as one step from the graduate step, which won't always be the case.
Australian figures: resident tax rates for 2026–27 (you're taxed as a resident once you move to live and work), full-time, tax-free threshold claimed, no HELP debt. UK figures are an approximation for 2026/27 using rest-of-UK income tax bands (Scotland differs), employee NI and an approximate Teachers' Pension rate; student loan repayments aren't included. The exchange rate is whatever you enter: the default is a round placeholder. Step mapping is an assumption: employers decide how they recognise overseas service. Pay data from each state's current scale, verified 16 October 2026 for NSW.
What 'assessment-ready' really means
AITSL's 4-week figure applies to assessment-ready applications. It doesn't define the term on its process page, but it says plainly that an incomplete application or incorrect documents will delay processing. In practice an application is ready when an assessor can make a decision from what's in front of them without asking you for anything.
Make your application assessment-ready
- Academic transcripts and award certificates for every qualification you're relying on.
- Evidence of your supervised teaching practicum: a letter or official document showing the days, the age range taught and that it was supervised. Short or vague practicum evidence is the most common sticking point.
- An IELTS Academic Test Report Form with Reading 7, Writing 7, Speaking 8 and Listening 8, from a test taken within 24 months, or evidence you meet the study exemption.
- Certified translations of anything not in English.
- Identity documents in the same name as your qualifications, plus evidence of any name change.
- The correct occupation (primary, middle, secondary or special needs) that matches your qualification and practicum.
The rules behind each item are explained in our AITSL skills assessment guide, including the 4-year study requirement and the six-country English exemption.
What slows applications down
Refunds, appeals and the Skilled Employment Statement
Fees from AITSL's fees page (effective 7 September 2026). Payment is by Visa or Mastercard through the Applicant Portal.
If you need points for skilled employment on a points-tested visa, request the SES as soon as your assessment comes back, because Home Affairs and state nomination programs may need it before you can lodge. Only paid teaching after your qualifying qualification, at 20 or more hours a week, in a registered school, within the past 10 years, in the same occupation group counts.
If the outcome isn't what you wanted
An unsuitable outcome costs you more time than any queue. AITSL says a not-suitable outcome has already been checked by three assessment officers, including senior assessors. You can appeal for $938, but an appeal only helps if AITSL made an error or you can supply evidence of something you already had at the time, such as a better practicum letter. It won't fix a qualification that's genuinely too short; for that you'd need further study or a different visa pathway.
- Early childhood teachers: AITSL no longer assesses Early Childhood (Pre-primary) Teacher (241111). Migration agents report that it moved to ACECQA from December 2024, so an AITSL application in that occupation will waste time and money.
- Wrong occupation: if your practicum was in secondary schools only, don't apply as a primary teacher. Pick the occupation your evidence supports.
- Reapplying: a fresh application is a new fee and a new place in the queue, so fix every gap first.
The whole timeline: AITSL is the short part
AITSL's 4 to 6 weeks is usually the most predictable step. Gathering documents, the visa and registration take longer and vary more. These are planning ranges, not official processing times.
Registration is separate from AITSL. See overseas teacher registration by state.
A realistic schedule for a teacher aiming to start in Term 1
- January to March
- Order transcripts and practicum letters; sit IELTS if needed
- April
- Submit AITSL once every document is in hand
- May
- AITSL outcome (4 to 6 weeks); request SES
- June onwards
- Visa steps; start state registration
- Term 4
- Apply for jobs; registration granted; book flights
Illustrative. Visa timing is the big unknown; a migration agent registered with the Office of the MARA can advise on your route.

Plan my moveWays to get a faster outcome
- Get the practicum letter first. It's the document most likely to be missing or vague, and the one that takes longest to get from overseas.
- Check your IELTS date. The test must be within 24 months of applying. Don't submit with a result that's about to expire.
- Match names across documents. Include every name-change document upfront.
- Submit everything at once. Partial uploads don't hold your place in a useful way; the assessor needs the full file.
- Check the queue week before you submit. If it has slipped, plan the rest of your timeline around that.
- Don't pay until you're ready. The refund is $982 of $1,198, and only before assessment starts.
