The short answer
American teachers can teach in Australia if their academic teacher preparation (a 4-year bachelor's with an education program, or a degree plus a master's in teaching) includes at least 45 days of supervised, assessed student teaching. A state licence alone isn't assessed. US study covers the English rule. Most Americans use a Work and Holiday (462) visa if eligible, or a skilled or sponsored visa. NSW pays $92,882 to $133,422 from October 2026.
- AITSL skills assessment for skilled visas: $1,198 from 7 September 2026.
- Alternative-certification routes without a university practicum may fall short.
- Most Australian states credit experience by full years, assessed by the employer.
- US citizens generally keep US tax filing obligations while living abroad.
What Australia looks at: your degree, not your licence
In the US, your licence or certificate from a state department of education is the key credential. In Australia it isn't. AITSL (for visas) and the state teacher regulators (for registration) assess your academic qualifications. They want at least four years of full-time higher education, including an initial teacher education program of at least a year, with at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice in a school, formally assessed and confirmed by the university.
General guide. AITSL does not pre-assess; each regulator assesses your documents. Credits and transfer arrangements can affect whether you reach four years.
English and the 'six countries' rule
The USA is one of six countries whose study meets AITSL's English requirement, along with Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the UK. NESA, VIT, TRBWA and TRB NT use the same list for registration. If your four years of study, including your teacher preparation and student teaching, were done in the US, you won't need IELTS. If part was abroad, check the detail in our IELTS guide.
Visa routes for Americans
US citizens are eligible for Australia's Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462), which has generally been open to US passport holders aged 18 to 30. Check the current age limit, requirements and work conditions on Home Affairs. It lets you live and work here for a year and is a popular way to try relief teaching. For longer stays, Americans use the same routes as others: a skilled visa (189, 190 or 491) after an AITSL assessment, or an employer-sponsored 482 Skills in Demand visa, which can lead to a permanent 186.
NSW lists primary, secondary and other school teacher groups on its 190 skills list. Some NT schools offer sponsorship at their discretion. Read the comparison in our teacher visa guide. Visa rules change and depend on your circumstances, so check Home Affairs or use a registered migration agent before you lodge.
Registration, background checks and timing
Your state licence doesn't transfer. You apply to the regulator in the Australian state where you'll teach, as an overseas-qualified teacher. Expect provisional registration at first. In Victoria, the VIT pre-assesses overseas qualifications, and you can only apply from overseas within three months of arrival with a Victorian job offer, an agency offer or a visa need. Regulators want national criminal history checks from each country where you've lived for 12 months or more as an adult. For the US, that means an FBI Identity History Summary. Check each regulator's accepted list.
Paperwork to get from the US before you leave
- Official transcripts for every degree, showing courses and credits.
- A college of education letter confirming student teaching days, grade levels, setting and supervision.
- Your diploma(s) showing the conferral date.
- Verification of employment letters from each district: dates, FTE, grade levels and any unpaid leave.
- A national criminal history check (FBI Identity History Summary), plus any other country you've lived in for 12 months or more.
- Your state teaching licence (not assessed, but some employers ask to see it).

Start planningHow your US experience counts toward salary
US salary schedules reward experience 'steps' and education 'lanes'. Australian scales mostly have a single classroom scale with steps, so a master's doesn't move you across a lane. Your step is set by the employer, based on letters of service. Victoria credits equivalent international school experience one step per year up to the top of the scale. The NT places you by completed years of service. The ACT recognises full years of prior experience. WA assesses each request for a higher salary, counting full years of continuous service only. NSW ties your starting step to your NESA accreditation level. In WA and Tasmania, being 5-year trained can lift your starting point.
US teacher with 5 years' experience, moving to Melbourne
- Victorian step if 5 years are approved
- 2-1 (1-1 plus five steps)
- Salary now (VGSA 2022 rates)
- $94,415
- Salary once VGSA 2026 is approved (1 Oct 2026 column)
- $106,758
- Take-home at $106,758 (2026-27 resident)
- $82,075 a year / $3,157 a fortnight
Illustrative. The Victorian Department approves experience. VGSA 2026 is awaiting Fair Work Commission approval; once it starts, increases from 10 August and 1 October 2026 are back paid.
What you'll earn
Government school classroom scales, as at 16 October 2026: NT $96,180 to $136,997; NSW $92,882 to $133,422; ACT $91,396 to $129,106; Queensland $90,164 to $119,357, with Senior Teacher at $124,601; WA $88,178 to $127,737; SA $84,971 to $123,236; Tasmania $85,313 to $122,393; Victoria $79,589 to $118,063 now, rising to $92,882 to $133,456 when its new agreement is approved. Employers pay at least 12% super on top. Australian salaries are quoted per year and paid fortnightly.
We don't convert US dollars here, because the rate moves and you'll be spending Australian dollars. Compare your likely step against rents and costs where you'd live. Also factor in benefits that don't exist in most US districts, such as long service leave after 7 to 10 years and 17.5% leave loading in many states. Compare states in the best state to teach guide.
Tax and health cover for Americans
- Australian tax: if you become an Australian tax resident, you're taxed here on your income. Working holiday makers are taxed at different rates. See teacher salary after tax.
- US tax: US citizens generally keep US filing obligations while living abroad. Get advice from someone who handles US expat returns.
- Super: your employer pays at least 12% into an Australian super fund. Think about how it interacts with US tax before you make extra contributions.
- Health: check your visa's Medicare eligibility with Services Australia and whether you need private health insurance as a visa condition.
