The short answer
A NSW teacher on Step 3 ($104,156 from 9 October 2026) takes home $80,306 a year in 2026–27, or about $3,089 a fortnight, after $21,767 income tax and $2,083 Medicare levy. With a HELP debt, a further $5,194 goes in repayments, leaving $75,112. A graduate on $92,882 takes home $72,640 ($2,794 a fortnight).
- 2026–27 tax rates: 0%, 15%, 30%, 37%, 45% plus 2% Medicare levy.
- Almost every classroom teacher sits in the 30% bracket: 32c of each extra dollar goes in tax and Medicare.
- With HELP, that becomes 47c on every extra dollar from $69,528 to $129,717.
- Your employer pays 12% super on top. It isn't taken out of these figures.
NSW teacher take-home pay at every step
These are full-year figures at the rates in force from the first full pay period on or after 9 October 2026, the final rise under the NSW Teachers Salaries and Conditions Award 2024. NSW Catholic systemic schools pay the same salaries. Your actual 2026–27 income will be a little lower, because July to early October was paid at the previous rates.
Resident, single, tax-free threshold claimed, no other income or deductions. Per fortnight = annual ÷ 26. Calculated with our 2026–27 engine from ATO rates.
For the full NSW scale with leadership roles, see NSW teacher pay after tax. For a figure that matches your own step, FTE and HELP status, use the calculator.

Work out my take-homeWorked example: tax on a $104,156 salary
NSW Step 3 teacher, 2026–27, no HELP debt
- Gross salary
- $104,156
- Tax on first $45,000 (0% to $18,200, 15% to $45,000)
- $4,020
- Tax on $59,156 between $45,000 and $104,156 at 30%
- $17,747
- Income tax
- $21,767
- Low income tax offset (cuts out at $66,667)
- $0
- Medicare levy at 2%
- $2,083
- Total tax
- $23,850 (22.9% of salary)
With a HELP debt: repayment income $104,156 minus $69,528 threshold = $34,628 × 15% = $5,194, leaving $75,112.
Your school payroll withholds about $920 a fortnight in PAYG tax at this salary using the ATO's Schedule 1 tax tables, which works out within a few dollars of the annual figure above. If you've ticked the HELP box on your TFN declaration, extra HELP withholding comes out each pay too.
Graduate and top-of-scale take-home in every state
Pay scales differ across Australia, so the same job pays very different take-home amounts. The table uses the rates each state is paying now. Victoria's figures are still the VGSA 2022 rates because the 2026 agreement is waiting on Fair Work Commission approval. Queensland's are the award rates from 1 September 2026 (4.75%), which beat the interim agreement rates while the dispute is in arbitration.

Why your next step rise feels smaller than it looks
Moving from NSW Step 3 to Step 4 adds $4,265 to your gross pay. Your take-home rises by $2,900 without HELP, and by only about $2,260 with HELP. That's because each extra dollar in the 30% bracket loses 32c to tax and Medicare, plus 15c to HELP if you have a debt.
Between $186,050 and $190,000, crossing into the top HELP band triggers 10% on your total repayment income. Low-income teachers between $45,000 and $66,667 also lose 1.5c per dollar as LITO phases out.
The Medicare levy surcharge trap at Step 4
If you don't have private hospital cover, you pay the Medicare levy surcharge once your income for surcharge purposes passes $105,000 (singles, 2026–27). A NSW teacher at Step 3 ($104,156) is just under. Step 4 ($108,421) is over, and the surcharge starts at 1% of your whole income: about $1,084 a year.
Family thresholds rise by $1,500 for each dependent child after the first. Income for MLS includes reportable fringe benefits and reportable super contributions, so salary sacrifice doesn't get you under it.
A basic hospital policy can cost less than the surcharge. Compare the premium with 1% to 1.5% of your income before deciding. That's a personal decision; this page just shows the numbers.
Part-time teachers: take-home at 0.6 and 0.8 FTE
Part-time pay is your step salary multiplied by your FTE. Because of the tax-free threshold and lower brackets, a part-time teacher keeps a slightly larger share of each dollar.
At 0.6 FTE the salary is under the $69,528 HELP threshold, so no compulsory repayment is due. The 0.6 FTE figure includes a small LITO of about $62.
Use the part-time teacher pay calculator for any FTE, or read part-time teaching and job share.
Legal ways to take home more
- Claim the deductions you're entitled to. From 2026–27, you get at least the $1,000 standard deduction automatically. Itemise if your real costs are higher. See teacher tax deductions.
- Salary sacrifice into super. It cuts your tax now, though it also cuts your take-home and doesn't reduce HELP. See salary sacrifice super for teachers.
- Salary packaging, if you work at a Catholic or independent school that's an FBT-rebatable employer. Government schools offer much less. See teacher salary packaging.
- Check your TFN declaration. Claim the tax-free threshold from one employer only, or you'll get a bill at tax time.
- Check your step. Teachers stuck on the wrong step after a move or accreditation change lose thousands. See how teacher pay steps work.
