The short answer
A full-time TAFE teacher in Australia earns roughly $76,600 to $107,500 to start and $104,700 to $128,900 at the top of the classroom scale, depending on the state. Canberra's CIT has the highest verified starting rate ($107,501 from 4 December 2025). Victoria's top classroom step is $128,887 from 1 May 2026, rising 1.5% on 1 November 2026.
- Every state runs its own TAFE agreement. None of them is the school teachers' agreement.
- Most states want the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, and several let you start while you complete it.
- TAFE agreements in QLD, SA and ACT have expired or are being renegotiated, so their rates are older.
- We could not verify an official TAFE NSW step table, so NSW is shown as a reported range only.
TAFE teacher pay by state: the comparison table
The table below shows the lowest rate for a qualified (or qualifying) teacher and the top classroom rate in each state and territory, with the date it applies from. Verified means we read the figure in the agreement, an official salary guide, a union pay table or a live employer page. Reported means the figure came from job-ad snippets we could not open, so treat it as a guide only.
Full-time base salary before tax, excluding employer super. Entry rates are not like-for-like: Victoria's Level 1.1 is for teachers still completing their Cert IV, while ACT and WA start rates assume you hold it. QLD and SA have lower 'tutor' and 'lecturer assistant' classifications below the rates shown. CIT's higher Educator Level 2 band (reported as starting at $127,651) is left out because the row labels in the source table are misaligned.

What your payslip should show
PAYG withheld each fortnight should be about $780 (ATO Scale 2, tax-free threshold claimed). Small differences come from rounding and 27-pay years. Your marginal rate is 32% including Medicare, so each extra $1,000 of salary adds about $680 to take-home.
Estimates for an Australian resident for 2026–27 who claims the tax-free threshold, with no other income, no dependants and private hospital cover not required. Medicare levy uses the 2025–26 low-income thresholds (2026–27 not yet published). Pay data: Crown Employees (Teachers in Schools and Related Employees) Salaries and Conditions Award 2024, verified 16 October 2026.
Why TAFE pay is set differently from school pay
TAFE teachers are not on the school teachers' scale in any state. Each TAFE system has its own enterprise agreement, and two different industrial systems are involved. TAFE NSW, the Victorian TAFE institutes, TasTAFE, CIT in Canberra and Charles Darwin University use federal agreements approved by the Fair Work Commission. TAFE Queensland, the WA TAFE colleges and TAFE SA use state-system agreements registered with the state industrial commission.
That matters because rises arrive on different dates and expire at different times. A school teacher in Queensland got an interim rise in September 2026, for example, but that did not flow to TAFE Queensland teachers, who are on a separate agreement. If you are comparing a school job with a TAFE job, compare the two specific scales, not 'teacher pay' in general. Our state pay scale pages cover the school side.
School teacher vs TAFE teacher pay structures
School teacher
- Needs a teaching degree and registration
- Steps tied to years of service and accreditation
- One scale per state system
- Paid on the school agreement
TAFE teacher
- Needs industry experience plus a Cert IV in Training and Assessment
- Levels tied to teaching qualifications as well as service
- Separate TAFE agreement in every state
- Higher education qualifications can lift you a level
Qualifications: the Cert IV TAE and what each state asks for
The core VET teaching qualification is the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE). Nationally, trainers in registered training organisations generally need it or a higher adult-education qualification, plus current skills in the industry they teach. Several TAFEs will hire you before you hold it and give you time to finish. What we could verify about each state:

These examples use the 2026-27 tax rates and the Medicare levy. All three salaries sit in the 32% marginal bracket, so each extra $1,000 of pay is worth about $680 in your pocket (less if you repay HELP). Employer super of 12% is on top, except at CDU, which pays 17% to non-casual staff.
Take-home pay at three TAFE salaries (2026-27)
- VIC Level 1.1 (from 1 May 2026): $84,618
- $67,020 a year, $2,578 a fortnight
- WA Grade 1: $96,229
- $74,916 a year, $2,881 a fortnight
- ACT CIT Educator Level 1.1: $107,501
- $82,581 a year, $3,176 a fortnight
No HELP debt. With HELP, take-home is $64,757, $70,911, $76,885 and $88,219 respectively. Employer super at 12% is extra: $10,154 on $84,618 and $15,466 on $128,887.
Casual and hourly TAFE rates
Many TAFE teachers start casual. Casual rates are hard to compare because each state bundles different things into the hourly rate. Some pay only for the hour in front of the class, some include preparation and marking, and Charles Darwin University pays an 'award lecture' that covers one hour of delivery plus one hour of associated time. Always check what the rate includes before comparing.
WA and Tasmanian casual rates were not available. Our teacher hourly rate guide explains how hourly rates compare with salaried pay.
Which state pays TAFE teachers the most?
On verified figures, Canberra's CIT pays the most to start at $107,501, well ahead of every other system. CIT's starting rate jumped under the 2023-26 agreement, which introduced a new classification structure in June 2024; before that it was reported as $80,673. Victoria has the highest verified top classroom rate at $128,887, rising to $130,821 on 1 November 2026 and $134,775 by November 2027.
Charles Darwin University starts lowest ($76,604, or $79,132 once the October 2026 rise is paid), but pays 17% employer super, which closes much of the gap. On a $90,000 salary the extra 5 percentage points of super is worth $4,500 a year. Victoria's Level 1.1 is also low, but it is a training rate you leave as soon as you complete the Cert IV.

Pay rises coming up
- VIC: +1.5% on 1 November 2026, then 1.5% on 1 May 2027 and 1 November 2027. The agreement runs to 31 October 2028. See the Victorian TAFE salary page.
- NT (CDU): +3.3% from the first full pay period on or after October 2026. The agreement reaches nominal expiry at the end of October 2026 (reported), so new bargaining is close.
- NSW: +3% from the first full pay period on or after 1 February 2027, the last rise in the 2025-2028 agreement. See TAFE NSW teacher salary.
- TAS: the TasTAFE agreement runs to 3 May 2027. Advertised ranges appear to have risen about 3% during 2026 (based on an earlier ad we could not reopen).
- WA: the 2023 agreement gave 12% over three years from 15 December 2023, so it is due for renewal around now. We have not seen a new offer.
- QLD, SA, ACT: waiting on new agreements. See TAFE Queensland teacher salary for what that means if you are there.

Teacher pay by state comparison
Compare school teacher pay across states before you decide between a school job and a TAFE job.
Compare statesTAFE or school teaching: what the money says
If you already hold a teaching degree, school pay usually beats TAFE pay in the long run, because school scales run higher at the top and add promotion steps like head teacher and deputy principal. A new NSW school teacher on Step 1 earns $92,882 from 9 October 2026, for example. If you are a tradesperson or industry specialist without a teaching degree, TAFE is the faster route to teaching, since you can start on a Cert IV rather than a four-year degree.
Check the hours as well as the salary. TAFE teaching hours, non-term work and leave are set by each agreement and differ from school terms. Our school holidays pay guide explains how school teachers are paid across the year, and the career hub covers moving between sectors.
