What your payslip should show
PAYG withheld each fortnight should be about $918 (ATO Scale 2, tax-free threshold claimed). Small differences come from rounding and 27-pay years. Your marginal rate is 32% including Medicare, so each extra $1,000 of salary adds about $680 to take-home.
Estimates for an Australian resident for 2026–27 who claims the tax-free threshold, with no other income, no dependants and private hospital cover not required. Medicare levy uses the 2025–26 low-income thresholds (2026–27 not yet published). Pay data: Victorian Government Schools Agreement 2026, verified 28 October 2026.
1-5 pay after tax
Resident, tax-free threshold claimed, full-time. Marginal rate 32% including Medicare. Your payslip's tax withheld may differ slightly from the year-end figure.
Pro-rata salary, 2026–27 tax, no HELP debt.
1-5 pay over time
Bargaining status: VGSA 2026 approved by the FWC (16 Oct 2026), in operation from 23 Oct; back pay to 10 Aug 2026
1-5 rises to $108,320 from 1 November 2027: about $109 a fortnight more after tax. Any back pay depends on when the rise reaches your pay; work yours out on the VIC pay rise page.
Moving up from 1-5
Classroom teachers have 11 subdivisions: Range 1 (1-1 to 1-5) and Range 2 (2-1 to 2-6). You move up one subdivision per annual cycle (1 May to 30 April) after a successful performance and development assessment. It is not automatic, but there is no quota, and you need at least 6 months' eligible service at a subdivision in the cycle. Moving from Range 1 to Range 2 requires meeting the Range 2 standards. Starting salary is 1-1 plus one subdivision for each year of approved experience (including CRT work in Victorian schools since 2005) up to 2-6. Learning Specialist and Leading Teacher (Range 3) are promotion positions, usually fixed-term. From May 2027 VGSA 2026 adds a 1% top-of-range allowance for teachers at 2-6 or 3-2 for 12 months. On normal progression, 1-5 is about 4 years after the 1-1 graduate step; the top classroom step (2-6, $133,456) usually takes about 10 years.
