The short answer
If you teach in a Very Remote area for 4 years full-time within a 6-year period, the Commonwealth reduces your HELP debt by the lesser of your teaching-degree debt and the debt you had when you started there. Indexation is waived while you teach there. You apply through the myHELP Reduction Portal after finishing your service.
- Very Remote is an ABS classification covering the most isolated parts of Australia, not every country town.
- Part-time service counts pro rata.
- Schools, preschools and centre-based day care all qualify.
- The NT separately reimburses up to $3,000 for new recruits.
Who qualifies
Eligibility for the Very Remote HELP reduction
- You teach in a school, preschool or centre-based day care service in a location classed as Very Remote Australia under the ABS 2021 Remoteness Areas.
- You complete 4 years of full-time teaching (1,400 days) within a 6-year period. Part-time service counts pro rata.
- You had a HELP debt when you started the eligible teaching.
- Your eligible teaching started in 2019 or later. Government sources disagree on the exact cutoff (1 January 2019 vs 14 February 2019), so check the Department of Education page if you started early in 2019.
How much debt is wiped
The reduction is the lesser of two numbers: the HELP debt from your initial teacher education qualification, and the HELP debt you owed when you began eligible teaching. So if you had other study debt as well, only the teaching part is covered. And if you had already repaid some of your teaching debt before going remote, the reduction is capped at what you owed when you started.

- $3,998
- Balance after 4 years of compulsory repayments (approx.)
- Lower than $28,000
The debt amount is an illustration. The year 1 repayment comes from our 2026-27 tax engine. The reduction can't exceed what you still owe, so compulsory repayments made through the tax system during your service reduce what's left to be wiped.

Check my repaymentsIndexation waived while you teach remote
HELP debts are indexed every 1 June at the lower of CPI and wage growth. The rate applied on 1 June 2026 was 2.8%. While you're in eligible Very Remote service, that indexation is waived, so your balance stops growing. On a $28,000 debt, 2.8% is $784 a year of indexation you don't pay.
Your repayments during service
Compulsory repayments keep coming out of your pay. From 2026-27 the system is marginal: nothing below $69,528 of repayment income, then 15 cents per dollar up to $129,717, then $9,028 plus 17 cents per dollar up to $186,050, and 10% of total income above that. Remote incentive allowances count as income, so they increase your repayment.

Part-time teachers: can you fit it into 6 years?
Because you need the equivalent of 4 full-time years inside a 6-year window, there is a minimum FTE that works. 4 ÷ 6 is about 0.67, so a teacher working less than about two-thirds of a full-time load for the whole 6 years won't get there. Mixing years works: a few full-time years can make up for part-time ones.
Our calculation from the 4-in-6 rule. Service days, not calendar years, are what's assessed; keep records of your actual days and fractions.
How to apply
Claiming the reduction
- 1
Confirm the location
Check the school is in a Very Remote area under the ABS 2021 Remoteness Areas before you accept the job, or as soon as you start.
- 2

Keep your contracts, start and end dates and any part-time fractions. You'll need to show 1,400 full-time-equivalent days within 6 years.
- 3
Finish your service
Apply after you complete the 4 years. The reduction isn't applied progressively.
- 4
Apply online
Use the myHELP Reduction Portal. Questions go to veryremotehelp@education.gov.au.
- 5
Check your ATO account
Once approved, the reduction shows on your HELP balance in myGov.
State schemes that add to it
- Northern Territory: new recruits can have up to $3,000 of HELP debt reimbursed, at the CEO's discretion (NT Educators' EA cl 49).
- Queensland: Teach Queensland lists HELP debt reduction in very remote locations among its Recognition of Rural and Remote Service benefits; this points to the Commonwealth scheme.
- Western Australia: the department lists the Commonwealth reduction for teachers at public schools in very remote areas, including Remote Teaching Service schools.
Putting it together: a new graduate in a remote NT school
NT remote categories are a department classification and are separate from the ABS Remoteness Areas used for the Commonwealth scheme. Check both.
Stacked together, a graduate who stays 4 years in a Very Remote NT school can finish with little or no teaching debt, years of rent-free living and a guaranteed transfer to a town school after 3 years. That's a strong financial start, but only if the posting suits you. See teaching in remote communities before you commit.
The 20% HELP cut has already been applied
Separately, all HELP balances were cut by 20% as at 1 June 2025 under the Universities Accord (Cutting Student Debt by 20 Per Cent) Act. The ATO applied it in stages from November 2025, and you didn't need to apply. The Very Remote reduction is calculated on top of whatever balance you have now. See HECS-HELP for teachers.
