The short answer
NSW pays the biggest ongoing rural incentive: $20,000 to $30,000 a year on top of salary at eligible schools, plus rent subsidies of up to 90%. Victoria offers up to $50,000 upfront for hard-to-staff roles. WA pays $5,000 to $13,730 a year, SA up to $11,391, and the NT combines remote allowances of up to $12,345 with free rent.
- Incentives are paid on top of normal salary and are taxable.
- Most are tied to specific schools, so check the school before you apply.
- Teachers in Very Remote areas may also get their HELP debt reduced.

Calculate my packageWhat incentives add to take-home pay
Incentives are taxed as income, so the take-home gain is smaller than the headline. At most teacher salaries every extra dollar is taxed at 32% (including Medicare) in 2026-27, and a HELP debt takes another slice. The real value is often in the non-cash items: free or heavily subsidised rent can be worth more than the cash.

Our 2026-27 tax engine, no HELP debt. The rent subsidy (90% at 8-point schools) is funded from the incentive, so if you use it the cash amount shrinks; the trade usually favours taking the subsidy.

NSW: the biggest ongoing cash
NSW's incentives depend on a school's points rating (4, 6 or 8 points) and whether it is a Connected Communities school. The Rural Teacher Incentive of $20,000 to $30,000 a year is paid after 12 months, and temporary teachers need at least a full term or 10 consecutive weeks. Permanent teachers with 6+ years at Proficient can add the Experienced Teacher Benefit ($10,000 a year for up to 5 years) at 6- and 8-point schools. The award also pays locality allowances, from $586 a year (Group 10) to $5,846 (Group 1, e.g. Tibooburra and White Cliffs), doubled with a dependent partner, plus a climatic allowance of $1,780 ($2,105 with a dependent partner) west of the Western Division line. See NSW rural teaching.
Victoria: large upfront payments for hard-to-staff roles
Victoria's Targeted Financial Incentives pay up to $50,000 before tax when you start in an eligible hard-to-staff rural or regional school, plus $10,000 retention payments after years 2, 3 and 4. You need to commit to at least 2 years, and eligibility depends on where you live now. There are 50 roles for Term 4 2026 and Term 1 2027 starts. The Regional Relocation Incentive pays up to $30,000 in retention payments plus up to $5,000 in relocation costs, and needs VIT registration before you start. Victoria's ongoing remote allowance is small ($475 a year with dependants under VGSA 2022, rising to $610 under the proposed VGSA 2026, still awaiting Fair Work approval). See Victoria rural teaching.
Western Australia: allowances, permanency and the Remote Teaching Service
WA's Country Teaching Program pays $5,000 (Band D), $8,020 (Band C), $10,210 (Band B) or $13,730 (Band A) a year at 146 country schools, and after 2 years of continuous satisfactory service you can be made permanent at your last CTP school. A temporary attraction and retention incentive pays up to $7,000 in 2026 at 67 listed regional and remote schools: 25% on starting and 75% if you stay to the end of the school year. The Remote Teaching Service is WA's deepest package: an RTS allowance of $15,370 (R3), $18,120 (R2) or $20,870 (R1) a year on top of District Allowance, 5 extra personal leave days a year, a transfer to a region of choice after 3 years (subject to availability), and RTS leave of 10 weeks after 6 semesters and 22 weeks (cumulative) after 8. WA's General Agreement 2023 expires on 5 December 2026, so check for changes. Use the department's allowances and benefits calculator to see what a specific school attracts. See WA rural teaching.
Queensland, SA, Tasmania, NT and the ACT
- Queensland: the Recognition of Rural and Remote Service scheme (RoRRS, formerly RAIS) applies at transfer-rating 4 to 7 locations. It pays up to $3,000 a year plus extra leave, subsidised flights and transfer points. Casuals aren't eligible. See QLD rural teaching.
- South Australia: the zone allowance is paid fortnightly, pro rata for part-timers, and stops during leave without pay. 2026 rates are locked in until the agreement is replaced. See SA rural teaching.
- Tasmania: isolated schools pay a settling-in amount for a 2-year commitment and start you at Level 8, $13,697 more than the usual Level 5 graduate start. See Tasmania rural teaching.
- Northern Territory: the Remote Incentive Allowance now includes the old retention payment and is paid fortnightly. Remote teachers also earn study leave points and get up to 4 business days a year to access services. See NT remote teaching.
- ACT: there are no remote schools in the usual sense, so no remote allowance. See ACT.
Commonwealth help: HELP debt reduction and scholarships
On top of state incentives, teachers who work in a Very Remote area (ABS classification) for 4 years full-time within a 6-year period can have part of their HELP debt reduced, and indexation is waived while they teach there. The Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships also pay a separate $2,000 for a final-year placement in a remote or very remote school. Details are in HECS debt relief for remote teachers.
