The short answer

In NT government schools, an Aboriginal Team Teacher starts at AT1 on $61,415 a year (about $32.03 an hour) from the first full pay period on or after 1 January 2026, rising to $90,881 at AT7. Full time is 36.75 hours a week. Another 4.3% rise is due from January 2027 (AT1: $64,056), and staff are paid stand-down salary over the school holidays.

  • Pay is set by the NT Public Sector Educators' 2024–2027 Enterprise Agreement.
  • The role was renamed from Assistant Teacher to Aboriginal Team Teacher in this agreement.
  • AT1 to AT5 progress yearly; AT6 and AT7 are paraprofessional levels.
  • Other NT school support roles are on a different agreement, not covered here.

Who this page covers

The Northern Territory Public Sector Educators' 2024–2027 Enterprise Agreement covers teachers and Aboriginal Team Teachers (ATTs) in NT government schools. It was approved by the Fair Work Commission on 31 October 2024 ([2024] FWCA 3775). ATTs work alongside teachers in the classroom. The agreement renamed the role from Assistant Teacher to Aboriginal Team Teacher, and calls AT6 and AT7 ATT (Paraprofessional).

How NT school staff are paid over the holidays

Employees on school-based conditions are stood down during non-term periods and paid stand-down salary, as long as their employment carries on into the next term (cl 31). In practice your pay keeps arriving every fortnight through the school holidays.

Stand-down rules in brief

  • Stand-down salary is paid for the non-term periods between and after terms.
  • It depends on your employment continuing into the next term; a contract that ends at the end of term doesn't carry stand-down beyond it.
  • If you take paid leave right before and after a stand-down period, that leave continues through it.

Progression and qualifications

  1. 1

    AT1 to AT5: yearly increments

You move up one level after each 12 months of service (cl 39). From AT1 to AT5 is worth $23,993 a year at the 2026 rates.

  2. 2

    AT6 and AT7: paraprofessional levels

To reach AT6 or AT7 you need the qualifications set out in Schedule 1 of the agreement, or recognised cultural authority with the principal's endorsement (cl 39).

  3. 3

    A new structure is coming

Clause 100 commits to a review of ATTs and 'classroom based support staff' during the agreement, to build paraprofessional classification structures.

Every NT school job needs an Ochre Card (the NT working with children clearance). For general steps into school support work, see how to become a teacher aide. If you want to move into teaching, see becoming a teacher in the NT.

What the January 2027 rise means for you

The 4.3% rise from the first full pay period on or after 1 January 2027 is already locked in by the agreement, so you can plan around it. Here is what it does to take-home pay at AT1, full time and at a typical part-time load of 0.6 (about 22 hours a week).

AT1 take-home pay before and after the January 2027 rise
Gross a yearTake-home a yearTake-home a fortnight
Full time, from 1 Jan 2026$61,415$51,321$1,974
Full time, from 1 Jan 2027$64,056$53,077$2,041
0.6 FTE, from 1 Jan 2026$36,849$34,015$1,308
0.6 FTE, from 1 Jan 2027$38,434$35,284$1,357

2026–27 tax rates applied to both years for comparison (2027–28 rates are not yet set), no HELP debt. The 2027 rise lands in the second half of the 2026–27 tax year, so your actual 2026–27 income will be between the two rows.

The ATT role includes team-teaching duties, so it is not an exact match for a teacher aide. NT AT5 ($85,408) is well above the top of most states' standard aide scales. See the teacher aide salary guide for every state.

Pay rises and bargaining status

The agreement gives three rises of 4.3%: from 11 October 2024, 1 January 2026 and 1 January 2027. The January 2027 rise is the last one scheduled, and the agreement runs to 2027, so bargaining for a replacement will follow. NT teachers get the same rises; see NT teacher pay and the pay rise tracker.
