How Tasmanian teacher assistants are classified

Tasmania doesn't have a separate teacher aide award. Teacher assistants are State Service employees under the Tasmanian State Service Award, General Stream (S085), and the department publishes their pay on its salary scales. Teacher assistant roles, including Teacher Assistant (MDT) and Social Trainer roles, sit in Band 2, Range 1, Levels 2 to 6.

We have not confirmed which band each admin or school support officer role sits in. We could not find an Aboriginal Education Worker classification on the DECYP scale.

Tasmanian teacher assistant pay rates

DECYP publishes both annual salaries and hourly rates. Dividing one by the other gives about 1,918 hours a year, or 36.75 hours a week, which is the full-time basis for these figures.

Are Tasmanian teacher assistants paid in the school holidays?

We could not confirm from a primary source how teacher assistants are paid across the school holidays in Tasmania: whether pay continues for 52 weeks or is calculated on term weeks only. The DECYP annual salary is a full-time rate, which is not the same as an answer to that question.

How to find out what applies to you

  • Your letter of offer or contract should say whether you are employed for school terms or for the full year.
  • Ask the school's business manager how your hours are set up in payroll.
  • Look at a payslip from a holiday period if you have one.
  • The CPSU (Community and Public Sector Union) Tasmania can explain State Service conditions.

On a full-time basis, Tasmania's teacher assistant entry salary of $69,593 is the highest of any state for an aide role. Per hour it is $36.28, behind NSW ($38.33 for an SLSO 1) and the ACT ($36.63), because full-time hours differ. Compare every state in the teacher aide salary guide.

Progression and qualifications

There are five levels in the teacher assistant range. Moving from Level 2 to Level 6 is worth $5,244 a year full time. We have not checked the progression rule for moving between levels (the timing and any performance requirement), so confirm it with your school or in the General Stream award. Moving to a higher band means being appointed to a role at that band.

Each school sets the selection criteria for its jobs. Every role needs a Tasmanian Working with Vulnerable People registration. See how to become a teacher aide for the general steps.

Bargaining status

The rates on this page are current as at the 27 August 2026 DECYP scale. Tasmanian teachers have their own agreement (3% from March 2026, 3% March 2027 and 2.75% March 2028), but it covers teachers only. We have not confirmed the status of the State Service General Stream wage agreement that covers teacher assistants. For teachers, see Tasmanian teacher pay.
