The short answer

NSW public school teachers with 40 weeks' continuous service get up to 14 weeks' paid parental leave, plus 2 bonus weeks if leave is shared (automatic for single parents), so up to 16 weeks. For births from 1 July 2026 you can also claim 26 weeks of government Parental Leave Pay, which now carries 12% super.

NSW teachers have two layers of paid parental leave: the NSW public sector scheme paid by the Department of Education, and the Commonwealth Parental Leave Pay paid by Services Australia. You can usually have both.

The NSW scheme applies to births on or after 1 October 2022 and covers birth and non-birth parents equally. The DoE Teachers Handbook still carries some older wording (14 weeks maternity and 1 week for the other parent), so check the current DoE parental leave page and your payroll team if the two don't match.

Up to 14 weeks paid parental leave for eligible birth and non-birth parents after 40 weeks' continuous service, plus 2 bonus weeks when leave is shared more equally (automatic for single parents), so up to 16 weeks. Up to 52 weeks unpaid. Commonwealth PPL can be claimed on top.

  • Casual teachers with 40 weeks' service get a maternity payment equal to 14 weeks' pay.

Government Parental Leave Pay for births from 1 July 2026

For a child born or adopted on or after 1 July 2026, Parental Leave Pay is 26 weeks (130 days), up from 24 weeks for 2025-26 births. It is paid at the national minimum wage, reported as about $1,005 a week before tax (check the current rate with Services Australia). The individual income test is $186,487, measured on your 2025-26 income, or $386,525 for the family test.

Most full-time NSW teachers pass the income test: even HA/Lead pay of $141,997 is well under $186,487. Couples should check the rules on days reserved for each partner and the work test with Services Australia before deciding who claims what.
