The short answer
A Head Teacher in a NSW public high or central school is paid $153,531 a year from the first full pay period on or after 9 October 2026. That is $20,109 more than a Step 7 classroom teacher ($133,422). After tax and Medicare, a Head Teacher takes home about $112,584 a year, or $4,330 a fortnight.
Head Teachers lead a faculty or a whole-school area in NSW high schools and central schools. The rate is set in Schedule 3 of the 2024 award and is pegged to other first-level executive roles: primary Assistant Principals, Teaching Principal 1 and School Counsellor SC5 all earn the same $153,531.

One rate for every Head Teacher
Unlike some states, NSW has no bands or steps for Head Teachers. A Head Teacher of a small faculty in a regional school is paid the same as one leading a large faculty in Sydney. It is a promotion by merit selection, so you apply for a specific position rather than progressing into it.
