Add the government's 26 weeks
For babies born or adopted on or after 1 July 2026, the federal Paid Parental Leave scheme pays up to 26 weeks (130 days) of Parental Leave Pay at the national minimum wage, reported as about $1,004.70 a week. The ATO pays 12% super on it into your fund. The individual income test is $186,487 on your 2025–26 income, which every Band 1 teacher is under.
A Level 7 teacher ($94,208) having a baby in 2027
- 18 weeks' DECYP paid leave
- about $32,610 gross
- 26 weeks' government Parental Leave Pay
- about $26,122 gross
- Super on government PPL (paid by the ATO)
- about $3,135
DECYP leave worked out as salary ÷ 52 × 18. PPL weekly rate is as reported; confirm with Services Australia. All amounts are taxable. The March 2027 3% rise would lift the DECYP figure.

Plan my leaveSuper while you're away
- The ATO pays 12% super on government Parental Leave Pay as a yearly lump sum after the financial year ends.
- Ask DECYP payroll whether employer super is paid on your 18 weeks of paid leave. Unpaid weeks earn no super.
- If you salary sacrifice, check whether it stops during unpaid leave.
Coming back
Many teachers return part-time. Part-time teachers are paid pro rata at their Band 1 level, and you should check with DECYP how part-time service counts toward your next increment. See returning to teaching after parental leave and part-time teaching and job share.
