The short answer

Teachers in Tasmania register with the Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania. For 2026–27 the annual fee is $121.32, plus a once-off $65.09 application fee for a first application or new registration cycle. You can pay up to five years in advance. Applications include a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check.

Every teacher in a Tasmanian school, government, Catholic or independent, must be registered with the Teachers Registration Board (TRB). The rules may change soon: the Teachers Registration Bill 2026 would replace the Teachers Registration Act 2000.

RWVP: working with vulnerable people

Tasmania's working with children scheme is Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP). Our understanding is that TRB registration covers the RWVP requirement for teaching, so most teachers don't need a separate RWVP card, but we have not confirmed this. If you also volunteer or coach outside school, you may need your own RWVP. Check with the TRB.

Interstate, NZ and overseas teachers

Teachers registered in another state can apply under mutual recognition, and NZ teachers with a current practising certificate under trans-Tasman mutual recognition. Teaching is exempt from automatic deemed registration, so you must apply to the TRB. Overseas-trained teachers need their qualifications assessed. If you need a visa, the AITSL skills assessment ($1,198 from 7 September 2026) is a separate step. See overseas teacher registration by state.

What the Teachers Registration Bill 2026 could change

A Teachers Registration Bill 2026 is before the Tasmanian Parliament to replace the Teachers Registration Act 2000. We don't yet know what it will change in fees or process. Watch the TRB website, and we'll update this page when it passes.
