The short answer

Tasmanian teachers received a 3% pay rise from the first full pay period in March 2026, with 3% more due in March 2027 and 2.75% in March 2028. The Teachers Agreement 2025 also added $500 at Level 13 and $400 for Advanced Skills Teachers before the 2026 rise. It runs to 19 September 2028.

The rise came after the longest teacher dispute Tasmania has seen in years, with work bans and the first 24-hour strikes in a generation during 2025. AEU members voted 72% in favour in April 2026, the Tasmanian Industrial Commission filed the agreement in July, and DECYP published the new scales on 27 August 2026.

What the rise means in dollars

The March 2026 rise was not a flat 3% at every level. Before applying the 3%, the agreement added flat amounts to three classifications. The DECYP scales match this exactly.

ClassificationBeforeBase adjustmentFrom March 2026Increase

Assistant Principal$138,909+$250$143,334+$4,425 (3.2%)

Back pay

The 3% applied from the first full pay period in March 2026, but the agreement wasn't filed until July, so the rise was paid as back pay. For a graduate on Level 5, the rise is worth about $95.58 a fortnight before tax. Back pay is taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate, so the PAYG on that payslip will look larger than usual.

Your number depends on how many pay periods passed between March 2026 and the date your back pay was processed, and on any higher duties or part-time changes.

How Tasmania's deal compares

At 8.75% over three years (compounding to about 9%), Tasmania's deal is modest next to the big 2026 resets elsewhere. Victoria's VGSA 2026, once Fair Work approves it, lifts the top of the classroom scale 13% by October 2026. The NT is paying 4.3% a year. Track every state on the teacher pay rise tracker.

What to watch

  • Your first pay in March 2027 should show the 3% rise; check your annual rate against our Tasmania pay scale.
  • DECYP should publish an official 2027 table. Our 2027 figures are calculations until it does.
  • The 2028 rise is 2.75%. One outlet reported 2.6%, but the Premier's release and Pulse Tasmania both say 2.75%.
  • Bargaining for the next agreement will begin before the 19 September 2028 end date.
