Your actual pay also depends on HECS-HELP, salary packaging, super choices and whether you work part-time.

Fortnightly take-home pay for Victorian teachers

Victorian Department staff are paid fortnightly. Divide the annual net figure by 26 for a typical pay. Most classroom teachers sit in the 30% tax bracket ($45,001 to $135,000), so each extra dollar of salary keeps 68 cents after tax and Medicare. Leading Teachers and assistant principals on the proposed rates cross $135,000 and pay 37% on the part above it.

What the VGSA 2026 rise means in your pocket

A graduate's gross pay rises $13,293 a year by 1 October 2026. After tax that is about $348 more a fortnight ($2,794 against $2,446). A teacher at 2-6 gains $15,393 gross, or about $403 a fortnight after tax. A Learning Specialist or Leading Teacher at 3-2 gains about $411 a fortnight. Because the rises are back-dated, your 2026-27 income will be a blend: if VGSA 2026 is approved, a top-step teacher's salary for the year works out at about $130,080 (40 days at the old rate, 52 at the August rate, then the October rate), or $97,934 after tax. A graduate's works out at about $90,250, or $70,850 after tax.

HECS-HELP on a teacher's salary

HELP repayments come out of every pay once your income passes the threshold, and the rate climbs as you earn more. On today's graduate salary of $79,589 the annual repayment is about $1,509. On the proposed $92,882 it is about $3,503, so a graduate with a debt keeps less of the rise than the headline suggests: take-home falls from $72,640 to $69,137. Back pay also counts as income for HELP. Model your own debt with the HECS-HELP calculator and read HECS-HELP for teachers.

Super and salary sacrifice

The Department pays 12% Super Guarantee on top of your salary, into Aware Super Future Saver by default or your chosen fund. Since 1 July 2026 Payday Super means it should land in your fund with each pay. Some long-serving staff are in ESSSuper defined-benefit schemes, which work differently. Tax on back pay and the $2,000 lump sum

When VGSA 2026 starts, back pay and the $2,000 lump sum are taxed as ordinary income. Payroll uses a special ATO withholding method for back pay, so the tax taken from that pay may look higher than usual. Because all of it falls in the 2026-27 income year, it is simply taxed at your marginal rate (32% including Medicare for most classroom teachers) when you lodge. Our guide to tax on teacher back pay explains the withholding.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a graduate teacher take home in Victoria?
About $2,446 a fortnight on today's $79,589, after 2026-27 tax and Medicare, or $63,601 a year. On the proposed VGSA 2026 rate of $92,882 from 1 October 2026 it rises to about $2,794 a fortnight. HECS reduces both.
How much tax does a Victorian teacher pay?
A top-step teacher on $118,063 pays about $25,939 income tax and $2,361 Medicare levy in 2026-27, a total of $28,300 or 24% of salary. Most classroom teachers have a marginal rate of 32% including Medicare.
Are Victorian teachers paid fortnightly?
Yes. Department of Education staff are paid fortnightly, so divide your annual salary by 26 for a gross pay. Allowances are also paid fortnightly unless the agreement says otherwise.
Will the VGSA 2026 back pay push me into a higher tax bracket?
Not for most classroom teachers. Even with back pay, a top-step teacher's 2026-27 income is about $130,080, still under the $135,000 threshold for the 37% rate. Leading Teachers and principal-class staff may cross it.
Does the Department pay super on top of my salary?
Yes. The 12% Super Guarantee is paid on top of salary, not taken from it. On $118,063 that is about $14,168 a year into Aware Super Future Saver or your chosen fund.
How is part-time teacher pay worked out in Victoria?
Your pay is the step rate times your FTE, and the $2,000 lump sum is pro rata. A 0.6 FTE teacher at 2-6 earns $70,838 on today's rate. Use the part-time teacher pay calculator for take-home.
Is the $2,000 VGSA 2026 lump sum taxed?
Yes. It is taxable income in 2026-27 and taxed at your marginal rate, so a classroom teacher keeps about $1,360 of it. Part-time staff get a pro-rata amount.
