The short answer

WA government school deputy principals are paid on the School Administrator salary levels, which run from $141,551 at Level 3.1 to $206,662 at Level 6.4 from 6 December 2025. The level for each deputy job depends on the school's classification, so a deputy in a small primary school and one in a large secondary school can earn very different amounts.

The 2023 agreement gives salary levels, not job titles. We haven't been able to verify which levels deputy principal roles sit at by school type, so treat the range below as the full span of administrator pay and check the classification on any job ad.

How the level is set

Each school is classified by the department, and the administrator level for its leadership positions follows that classification. The 2023 GA lifted some schools: District High School principals moved to Level 5 and WA College of Agriculture principals to Level 6. If your school's classification changes, ask whether the deputy positions change too.

Country and remote deputy roles

Deputy roles in country and remote schools attract the same allowances as teaching jobs: up to $13,730 a year under the Country Teaching Program and up to $20,870 at Remote Teaching Service schools, plus District Allowance. At Level 3.1 plus R1, that's $162,421 a year before tax. See WA rural and remote pay.

Applying

Deputy roles are merit-selected. Your application should show leadership of whole-school priorities, staff and data. Use the selection criteria coach and read how to become a principal if that's your next step. Principal pay is on the WA principal salary page.
