The short answer
Teachers in WA schools must be registered with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA). The application fee is $140 for provisional or $178 for full registration, and the annual fee is $95, covering 1 April to 31 March. Renewal costs $56, and you also need a separate WA Working with Children Check.
The TRBWA registers teachers for public, Catholic and independent schools. Fees are low by national standards, but the annual fee has a fixed due date of 31 March, and missing it costs extra. Full registration also matters for pay: you need it to apply for Senior Teacher.

Provisional and full registration
Provisional registration
- For new graduates
- $140 application fee
- Lets you teach while you show you meet the Proficient standard
Full registration
- Once you meet the Proficient standard
- $178 if applying directly
- Needed to apply for Senior Teacher 1 ($132,557)
Senior Teacher 1 requires full TRBWA registration, 12 months at Level 2.9 and relevant professional learning in the last 5 years. So moving to full registration early keeps your path to the higher salary levels open. Registration must be renewed before it expires. See our guide to Proficient teacher accreditation.
Working with Children Check
WA's Working with Children Check is run by the Department of Communities and is separate from TRBWA registration. You need both. We didn't verify the current fee. A first check is generally not tax deductible, but renewals while you're working as a teacher are. More in our working with children check guide.
Keeping your registration current
Each year and each renewal
- Pay the $95 annual fee by 31 March (the late fee is $59 in April)
- Track your professional learning, which also counts toward Senior Teacher
- Renew before your registration term expires
- Keep your Working with Children Check current
Interstate, New Zealand and overseas teachers
- From another state: apply for equivalent registration under mutual recognition. Teaching is exempt from automatic deemed registration, so you must apply.
- From New Zealand: teachers with a current NZ practising certificate can register under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act.
- From overseas: apply as an overseas-qualified teacher with qualification and English evidence. An AITSL skills assessment ($1,198 from 7 September 2026) is for your visa only. See overseas teacher registration by state and UK teachers moving to Australia.
- You'll still need a WA Working with Children Check, even if you hold a check from another state.
