The short answer
The ACT has no rural or remote incentive scheme, because almost all its public schools are in Canberra's suburbs. It has discretionary Attraction and Retention Incentives and travel payments for Birrigai and Jervis Bay School. For country incentives, look across the border: NSW pays $20,000 to $30,000 a year at eligible rural schools.
If you searched for rural teaching incentives in the ACT, here is the honest answer: there isn't much, because there isn't much rural ACT. The Teaching Staff Enterprise Agreement has no remote locality allowance, no rural housing scheme and no HELP repayment offer. The research behind this page found nothing to suggest otherwise.
That doesn't mean your options end at the ACT border. Canberra is surrounded by NSW, and NSW runs one of the biggest rural incentive programs in the country. This page covers both.

What the ACT itself offers
Source: ACT Teaching Staff EA 2023-2026. The ACT has no rural or remote allowance system comparable to the states.
Jervis Bay School is the closest thing to a non-metropolitan ACT posting. It sits in the Jervis Bay Territory on the NSW south coast and is staffed through the ACT Education Directorate. If you are interested, ask the Directorate what travel and other arrangements apply; the agreement only spells out the travelling entitlement.
Teaching in country NSW from Canberra
NSW Department of Education schools in the Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, Riverina and further west are within reach of Canberra, and some of them attract NSW's incentives. As at its 28 September 2026 update, the NSW department lists:
- Rural Teacher Incentive: $20,000 to $30,000 a year at eligible schools.
- Recruitment bonus: $20,000, only when the job advertisement says so.
- Experienced Teacher Benefit: $10,000 a year for up to 5 years.
- Retention payments: $5,000 a year for up to 10 years.
- Relocation: $5,000 or $8,000, plus help with stamp duty of up to $10,000.
- Rental subsidy: 50%, 70% or 90% in eligible locations.
See rural and remote teaching in NSW for the full NSW scheme, including locality and climatic allowances. If you want genuinely remote teaching, the Northern Territory pays a Remote Incentive Allowance of up to $10,319 a year ($12,345 with dependants) with rent-free housing.
Is moving out of Canberra worth it?
For a teacher at the top of the ACT scale ($129,106), the gap to a NSW rural school depends heavily on which incentives apply. A $20,000 Rural Teacher Incentive can outweigh the difference between the two state scales, but you lose ACT perks like 12.5% super.
