The short answer
Teacher allowances are paid on top of salary for where you teach, extra responsibility or the students you teach. The biggest are rural and remote: up to $30,000 a year in NSW, $20,870 a year at WA's most remote schools and up to $50,000 upfront in Victoria. Leadership allowances are smaller, such as NSW's Year Adviser allowance of $5,183 a year.
- Rural and remote payments are by far the largest, and most depend on the school, not you.
- Leadership and special education allowances usually run from about $1,000 to $6,000 a year. The NT's HAT and Lead Teacher allowances are the exception.
- Allowances are taxable, and most are pro rata if you work part-time.
- Victoria's VGSA 2026 rates apply from its approval in October 2026; Queensland's arbitration is still to come.
How teacher allowances work
Allowances fall into four groups. Location allowances pay for teaching somewhere hard to staff or isolated: rural incentives, remote allowances, climatic and locality allowances, housing subsidies and travel. Responsibility allowances pay for an extra role without a promotion, such as Year Adviser or Teacher in Charge. Student allowances pay for teaching particular classes, such as students with disabilities or a special school. Other allowances cover things like first aid and overnight camps.
Three rules apply almost everywhere. Allowances are taxable income: the money shows on your payslip and PAYG is withheld from it. Most are pro rata for part-time staff. And most location payments stop when you leave the eligible school, while several are paid only once you've stayed a set time. Acting in a higher role is different again: that's higher duties allowance, which tops your salary up to the higher role's pay.

What your payslip should show
PAYG withheld each fortnight should be about $780 (ATO Scale 2, tax-free threshold claimed). Small differences come from rounding and 27-pay years. Your marginal rate is 32% including Medicare, so each extra $1,000 of salary adds about $680 to take-home.
Estimates for an Australian resident for 2026–27 who claims the tax-free threshold, with no other income, no dependants and private hospital cover not required. Medicare levy uses the 2025–26 low-income thresholds (2026–27 not yet published). Pay data: Crown Employees (Teachers in Schools and Related Employees) Salaries and Conditions Award 2024, verified 16 October 2026.

NSW has two layers. The award (Schedules 7 and 8 of the Crown Employees (Teachers in Schools) Award 2024) sets responsibility, student and isolation allowances, at rates from 9 October 2026. The department's incentives for rural and remote schools sit on top. They're mostly tied to the school's incentive points (4, 6 or 8) or Connected Communities status.
Also: motor vehicle allowance at isolated schools ($3,143 or $1,578 a year) and stamp duty relief of up to $10,000. See rural and remote teaching in NSW.
Victorian teacher allowances
Victoria's big money is in two recruitment programs for hard-to-staff rural and regional schools. The Targeted Financial Incentive pays up to $50,000 upfront, then $10,000 after years 2, 3 and 4. It needs at least a two-year commitment, and there are 50 roles in 2026-27 starting Term 4 2026 and Term 1 2027. The Regional Relocation Incentive pays up to $30,000 in three $10,000 retention payments, plus up to $5,000 to relocate. Both are before tax, and you apply through School Jobs Vic.
VGSA 2026 was approved by the Fair Work Commission on 16 Oct 2026 and came into operation on 23 Oct 2026, so its rates now apply (new allowances keep their own start dates). See the Victorian pay rise page.
Queensland teacher allowances
Queensland's rural payments depend on your school's transfer rating (TR), from TR4 to TR7 for the most remote. The Recognition of Rural and Remote Service (RoRRS, formerly RAIS) pays up to $3,000 a year in the first year at TR4-7 schools. It also brings an identified location allowance of up to $1,000 a year, subsidised flights, an extra week of summer holidays and transfer points. Casual teachers aren't eligible.
- Locality allowance: up to $4,596 a year single or $9,193 family, depending on location. The listed figure may not yet include the 1 September 2026 indexation.
- Recognition of location travel allowance: up to $3,000 per person a year for teachers and family in TR5-7 locations.
- Beginning teacher rural payment: a one-off $1,000 (TR4-5), $1,500 (TR6) or $2,000 (TR7).
- 3-year-trained Senior Teacher allowance: $201.00 a fortnight from 1 September 2026 (was $191.00). A secondment allowance is paid at the same rate.
- Specified sites allowance: $46.80 a fortnight, including youth detention centres.
Queensland's new agreement (EB11) is in arbitration, so allowance rates could change when the decision comes. The Queensland rural and remote page has the transfer rating detail.
WA teacher allowances
WA pays the largest ongoing remote allowance in the country. The Remote Teaching Service (RTS) allowance is $20,870 a year at R1 schools, $18,120 at R2 and $15,370 at R3. It's paid fortnightly on top of salary and District Allowance. RTS schools also bring RTS leave (10 weeks after 6 semesters), 5 extra personal leave days a year and a transfer to a region of your choice after 3 years, subject to availability. The Country Teaching Program pays $13,730 (Band A), $10,210 (B), $8,020 (C) or $5,000 (D) a year at 146 country schools, with permanency after 2 years' satisfactory service.

Other WA allowances: the Metropolitan Teaching Program pays up to $3,000 a year at 72 hard-to-staff Perth schools. The Graduate Teacher Allowance is $2,000 a year for your first two years. Special Responsibility Allowance bands run from $607 to $2,428 a year; Band 2 ($1,213) covers education support centres, schools and programs. More on the WA rural and remote page.
SA and Tasmania teacher allowances
South Australia pays the Country Incentives Zone Allowance fortnightly, at 2026 school-year rates: Zone 2 $2,261, Zone 3 $3,986, Zone 4 $7,031 and Zone 5 $11,391 a year. A one-off incidentals payment of $589 to $1,179 applies when you're recruited to a permanent job in Zones 2-5. Permanent teachers at Aboriginal and Anangu schools get a term's paid study leave after 2 years. SA's Permanent Relieving Teacher loadings (5% local, 12.5% area, 17.5% statewide) are paid for relief work across schools. Locality and Whyalla allowances exist under the Teachers Award, but we haven't confirmed the amounts.
Tasmania focuses on isolated schools: a $5,000 settling-in payment when you commit to two years, retention payments of $3,138 after year 1, $3,275 after years 2 and 3 and $6,281 after years 4-6, an experienced teacher allowance of $3,250 a year, and housing at $10 a week at four west coast schools. Graduates at isolated schools start at Band 1 Level 8 ($99,010) rather than Level 5. The Hard-to-Staff Schools pilot pays $1,000 in Term 1 and $2,275 in Term 3. The professional learning ($300 a year), overnight activity ($44.95 a night) and Relief Coordinator ($25-$75 a term) allowances come from reports of the 2025 agreement offer; we haven't checked them against the agreement text.
ACT and NT teacher allowances
The ACT has no rural or remote allowance system. Its main allowance is the HALT payment of $7,495 a year (from December 2025) for certified Highly Accomplished or Lead Teachers at the top of the TL or SLC scale. The first aid allowance is $4.11 a day (advanced) or $4.88 a day (occupational). Travel to Birrigai and Jervis Bay School is paid per trip, and attraction and retention incentives are discretionary.
The Remote Incentive Allowance counts as salary for tax and super and is pro rata for part-time staff. Remote teachers also get a 100% rental concession in department housing and 2 or 3 return airfares a year (FOIL). More on the NT rural and remote page.
Special education, leadership and first aid compared
Our state data doesn't show a first aid allowance for teachers outside the ACT. If you're your school's first aid officer elsewhere, ask payroll whether one applies.
In most states, HALT is paid as a higher salary step rather than an allowance. See the HALT guide for what certification pays everywhere. Responsibility allowances are also a good first step towards a promotion; how to become a head teacher explains how panels use that experience.
Making sure you're paid every allowance
Check these when you start at a new school
- Ask the business manager which allowances the school attracts: incentive points, zone, category or transfer rating.
- Apply for anything that isn't automatic, such as the NSW climatic allowance, which must be applied for.
- Tell payroll if you have a dependent partner or children; several location allowances pay more for them.
- Check whether a payment depends on staying: WA's ARI pays 75% only if you stay to the end of the school year.
- Look for each allowance as its own line on your payslip. Our payslip guide shows where.
- Keep your appointment letter. Some incentives need a minimum appointment (a term, 4 terms or 2 years).
Allowances are taxable, and some come as lump sums that can push a fortnight's withholding up. Model your own figure with the take-home pay calculator, and read is rural teaching worth it for the full picture, including housing and HELP debt relief.
