The short answer
Queensland state teachers in transfer-rating 4-7 schools get the Recognition of Rural and Remote Service (RoRRS) payment of up to $3,000 a year, an identified location allowance of up to $1,000, travel of up to $3,000 per person (TR5-7), locality allowance up to $4,596 single or $9,193 family, and a one-off $1,000-$2,000 beginning teacher payment.
Queensland has one of the biggest rural and remote school networks in the country, and it uses a transfer rating (TR) system to decide who gets what. Schools are rated from TR1 (easy to staff) to TR7 (most remote). Most incentives start at TR4, and the richest ones are for TR5-7 locations in places like Cape York, the Torres Strait and the far west.
The scheme that used to be called RAIS (Remote Area Incentive Scheme) is now Recognition of Rural and Remote Service (RoRRS). Figures below come from Teach Queensland, updated 27 July 2026. Casual (supply) teachers are not eligible for RoRRS.

Benefits that aren't cash
- An extra week of summer holidays in eligible RoRRS locations.
- Subsidised flights and discretionary leave days for travel home.
- Accelerated transfer points, so a stint in a remote school can help you get your preferred placement later.
- HELP debt reduction in very remote locations under the Commonwealth scheme: after 4 years full-time teaching within 6 years in a Very Remote area, your initial teacher education HELP debt can be reduced. See HECS relief for remote teachers.
- Housing: the Department runs a rural and remote housing incentive scheme with subsidised or reduced rent. Details are from a 2024 fact sheet and weren't re-checked, so ask about rent and availability before accepting a job.

Getting a Queensland rural or remote position
- 1
Check the transfer rating
Ask the Department or the school for its TR rating. That decides whether RoRRS, travel and the beginning teacher payment apply.
- 2
Ask about housing
Many remote schools rely on Department housing. Confirm rent, what's furnished and whether it's shared before you accept.
- 3
Apply through Teach Queensland
Rural and remote vacancies are advertised by the Department; graduates can also flag that they're willing to go anywhere, which improves the odds of a permanent offer.
- 4
Claim your payments
Make sure HR has set up RoRRS, locality allowance and the beginning teacher payment. Keep records of travel you're entitled to.
