The short answer

Only the NT (4.3% from January 2027, graduate $100,316, top $142,888), Tasmania (3% from March 2027) and Victoria (4% from 1 November 2027, top step $138,794) have a 2027 teacher pay rise locked in. Victoria's VGSA 2026 was approved by the Fair Work Commission on 16 October 2026. QLD, WA, SA and the ACT depend on bargaining or arbitration; NSW has nothing scheduled.

  • NT: scheduled, from the first full pay period on or after 1 January 2027.
  • Tasmania: scheduled, from the first full pay period in March 2027.
  • Victoria: scheduled under the VGSA 2026 (approved 16 October 2026), after big back-dated rises in 2026.
  • QLD, WA, SA, ACT and NSW: 2027 rates not yet known.

What your payslip should show

PAYG withheld each fortnight should be about $780 (ATO Scale 2, tax-free threshold claimed). Small differences come from rounding and 27-pay years. Your marginal rate is 32% including Medicare, so each extra $1,000 of salary adds about $680 to take-home.

Estimates for an Australian resident for 2026–27 who claims the tax-free threshold, with no other income, no dependants and private hospital cover not required. Medicare levy uses the 2025–26 low-income thresholds (2026–27 not yet published). Northern Territory: 4.3% in January 2027

The NT Public Sector Educators' 2024-2027 Enterprise Agreement gives a third and final 4.3% from the first full pay period on or after 1 January 2027. The agreement publishes the 2027 table itself, so these are official rates, not projections. A graduate moves from $96,180 to $100,316, and CT9 from $136,997 to $142,888. CT8 in 2027 ($136,997) equals CT9 in 2026 by design. The agreement's nominal expiry is 31 December 2027, so 2028 pay depends on the next deal. See NT teacher pay rise.

Worked example

NT teachers' January 2027 rise after tax (2026-27 rates)

CT1: $96,180 to $100,316
$74,882 to $77,695 a year
CT9: $136,997 to $142,888
$102,498 to $106,092 a year
Extra take-home a year at CT9 $3,594

Full-year figures from our tax engine, no HELP. In 2026-27 you only get about half of this, as the rise starts in January. CT9 is taxed at 39% at the margin from $135,001.

Tasmania: 3% in March 2027

Tasmania's Teachers Agreement 2025 (20 September 2025 to 19 September 2028) schedules 3% from the first full pay period in March 2027 and 2.75% in March 2028. Applying 3% to the March 2026 scale gives about $87,872 at Band 1 Level 5, the usual graduate start, and about $126,065 at Level 13. Advanced Skills Teachers go to about $133,529. These are our calculations; the Department's published scale may round differently. See Tasmanian teacher pay rise.

Victoria: VGSA 2026's November 2027 rise

Victorian government school staff voted 93.1% yes to the VGSA 2026 in September 2026, and the Fair Work Commission approved it on 16 October 2026. It replaced the VGSA 2022 rates ($79,589 to $118,063). Teachers get back pay to two rises in 2026: from 10 August and from 1 October 2026, which lifts the graduate step to $92,882 and 2-6 to $133,456. Those rates carry through most of 2027.

Victoria VGSA 2026 classroom rates: 2026 to 2028
StepOld rate (VGSA 2022)From 1 Oct 2026From 1 Nov 2027From 1 Nov 2028

1-5 (top of Range 1)$91,056$104,154$108,320$112,653
2-1 (Range 2 entry)$94,415$106,758$111,028$115,469
2-6 (top of classroom scale)$118,063$133,456$138,794$144,346
3-2 (top of Range 3)$129,544$146,439$152,297$158,389

From the VGSA 2026 Schedule 1, approved by the Fair Work Commission on 16 October 2026. From May 2027 the agreement also adds a 1% top-of-range allowance for 12 months for teachers at 2-6 or 3-2. Victorian Catholic employers have proposed matching rates, but there's no in-principle deal yet.

At 2-6, the November 2027 rise is worth about $3,364 a year after tax ($100,230 to $103,594 on 2026-27 rates). Read Victoria's pay rise page for the timeline and back pay, and use the back pay calculator to estimate your lump sum.

NSW: no rise until a new award

NSW teachers got the third and final 3% of the 2024 award from 9 October 2026. The award runs to 8 October 2027 with a no-extra-claims clause, and no further rise is scheduled. So expect current rates, $92,882 to $133,422 (HA/Lead $141,997), for all of 2027 unless a new award is made. A rise from around October 2027 is possible but not agreed, and we won't guess its size. See NSW pay rise.

Queensland, WA, SA and the ACT: 2027 is unknown

  • Queensland: the teachers' agreement is in QIRC arbitration. Teachers have a 3% interim rise on agreement rates from 7 September 2026, or the higher 4.75% award rate from 1 September 2026 for Bands 1 to 3, Senior Teacher and EST. A decision is expected in late 2026 or 2027; the QTU is claiming 3% plus 7%, 7% and 7%. See Queensland pay rise and Queensland Senior Teacher pay.
  • Western Australia: the 2023 General Agreement's last rise was 3% from 6 December 2025 and it expires on 5 December 2026. The SSTUWA has started its claims, but we found no government offer. See WA pay rise.
  • South Australia: the final 3% of EA 2024 was paid from 8 May 2026. The agreement nominally expires around late March 2027 (our calculation from its 36-month life). The AEU's EA27 campaign is under way with no offer yet. See SA pay rise.
  • ACT: the 2023-2026 agreement expired on 31 March 2026, and rates have been frozen since 4 December 2025. AEU ACT members rejected a 9% over three years offer on 11 September 2026. See ACT pay rise.

Tax in 2027: a small extra boost

Our take-home figures use 2026-27 tax rates, where the bottom rate is 15%. The rate on income from $18,201 to $45,000 is legislated to fall to 14% from 1 July 2027, which adds a little to everyone's take-home in 2027-28 on top of any pay rise. Check your own figures with the take-home pay calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Will teachers get a pay rise in 2027?
Some will. NT government teachers get 4.3% from January 2027 and Tasmanian teachers 3% from March 2027. Victorian teachers get 4% from November 2027 under their new agreement. Other states' 2027 rises depend on bargaining or arbitration.
What will NT teachers earn in 2027?
From the first full pay period on or after 1 January 2027, NT government teachers earn $100,316 at CT1 (graduate) up to $142,888 at CT9, after the third 4.3% rise in their agreement.
What is the Victorian teacher pay scale for 2027?
Under the VGSA 2026, Victorian teachers are paid $92,882 (graduate) to $133,456 (2-6) from 1 October 2026, rising 4% to $96,598 and $138,794 from 1 November 2027. The Fair Work Commission approved the agreement on 16 October 2026.
Will NSW teachers get a pay rise in 2027?
Nothing is scheduled. The 2024 award's last 3% was paid from October 2026 and the award runs to 8 October 2027, so any 2027 rise depends on a new award.
When will Queensland teachers get their next pay rise?
It depends on the QIRC arbitration of the teachers' agreement, expected in late 2026 or 2027. Interim and award rises already applied from September 2026.
What is the WA teacher pay rise for 2027?
Not yet known. The WA agreement's last rise was 3% from 6 December 2025 and it expires on 5 December 2026. No government offer for the next agreement had been made as at mid-October 2026.
Which state will pay teachers the most in 2027?
On what's already scheduled, the NT, with a top classroom rate of $142,888 from January 2027. Victoria's $138,794 from November 2027 and any new deals in other states could change the order.
