The short answer
SA pays country teachers a Country Incentives Zone Allowance of $2,261 (Zone 2), $3,986 (Zone 3), $7,031 (Zone 4) or $11,391 (Zone 5) a year in 2026, paid fortnightly. A one-off $589 to $1,179 is paid when you take up a permanent country appointment, and Aboriginal and Anangu schools add a term of paid study leave.
South Australia's country incentives are set out in Schedule 2.2 of the 2024 enterprise agreement. They are simpler than some states' points systems: your school's zone sets an annual allowance, and permanent appointments attract a small one-off payment on top.

Country Incentives Zone Allowance
SAET EA 2024 Schedule 2.2. 2025 rates were $2,195, $3,870, $6,826 and $11,059. The 2026 rates continue until a new agreement replaces EA 2024.
- Paid fortnightly, pro rata if you are part-time.
- Covers teachers, leaders and temporary teachers in Zone 2–5 schools and preschools, for the whole appointment.
- Keeps being paid during paid parental leave.
- The one-off incidentals payment is only made once you actually start at the school on a permanent appointment.

Aboriginal and Anangu schools
Teachers in Aboriginal and Anangu schools get extra non-cash incentives. Permanent Band 1 teachers, Band B leaders (except deputy principals) and preschool staff earn one term of paid study leave after two years. Principals and deputy principals get a 4-week induction and a term of training and development leave after three years. The Anangu schools named in the agreement are Pipalyatjara, Amata, Fregon, Indulkana, Ernabella, Mimili, Murputja, Kenmore Park, Yalata and Oak Valley.
Older incentives for long-serving staff
Teachers with country service from before 2003 may still be covered by the old isolation-points system in Schedule 2.1. Examples include an extra salary increment (up to Step 8) after four years at a 3.5-point school, two increments at 5.5 points or more, and a removal allowance after seven years. If this might apply to you, ask HR to check your service history.
Housing and other allowances
The agreement also names locality allowances, a Whyalla living allowance and special class allowances, but their amounts sit in other determinations we have not read. Housing in country SA is not part of the zone allowance. Ask the school or DfE before accepting a position what housing is available and what it costs. Our guide to teacher housing in rural and remote areas covers what to ask.
How to take up a country position
- 1
Find the zone
Ask DfE or the school which country zone it is in before you apply. It sets your allowance.
- 2
Apply through DfE
Country vacancies are advertised by the department, and many go to graduates and teachers seeking permanency.
- 3
Confirm permanency
The one-off incidentals payment is only for permanent appointments, so check whether the offer is permanent or temporary.
- 4
Check your pay
The allowance should appear on your first fortnightly payslip. Chase it quickly if it is missing.
