The short answer

Every teacher in a Queensland school must be registered with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). Graduates start with provisional registration and move to full registration once they meet the Proficient standard. The annual fee is about $100.70 (indexed 3.4% from 1 October 2025), and registered teachers are generally exempt from a separate Blue Card.

The Queensland College of Teachers registers teachers for government, Catholic and independent schools alike. You need registration before you can be employed as a teacher, and you must keep it current every year. The QCT site blocked our research tools, so the fee figures below come from search extracts of QCT pages: treat them as close but check the QCT fees page before you pay.

Provisional and full registration

Provisional registration

  • For graduates who have finished an accredited teaching degree
  • Lets you work as a teacher while you build evidence against the Proficient standard
  • Paying the annual fee at the end of year 2 extends it for 2 more years

Full registration

  • Granted once you show you meet the Proficient career stage
  • Needed for the long term; renewed through the annual fee and professional development

Moving to full registration means collecting evidence from your teaching against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, supported by your school. Our guide to Proficient teacher accreditation explains what assessors look for.

Blue Card and working with children

Queensland's working with children check is the Blue Card. Teachers registered with the QCT are generally exempt from needing a separate Blue Card for their teaching work, because the QCT does its own suitability checks. We couldn't confirm the current wording on the QCT site, and some roles outside teaching (coaching a club team, for example) may still need a Blue Card, so check if you volunteer outside school. Our working with children check guide covers each state.

Keeping your registration current

Each year

  • Pay the annual fee on time so your registration doesn't lapse (reapplying costs far more)
  • Keep a record of professional development
  • Update the QCT if your name, address or criminal history changes
  • If you're on provisional registration, track your evidence toward full registration

Interstate, New Zealand and overseas teachers

  • From another state: apply under mutual recognition for equivalent registration. Teaching is exempt from automatic deemed registration, so you must apply to the QCT.
  • From New Zealand: teachers with a current NZ practising certificate can get equivalent registration under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act.
  • From overseas: you apply as an overseas-qualified teacher with your qualifications and English evidence. An AITSL skills assessment ($1,198 from 7 September 2026) is for migration only and doesn't register you to teach. See overseas teacher registration by state.

Frequently asked questions

How much does QCT registration cost?
The annual QCT registration fee is about $100.70 for both provisional and full registration, after fees were indexed 3.4% from 1 October 2025. Reapplying after a lapse can cost up to $312.17. Confirm current fees on the QCT website.
Do Queensland teachers need a Blue Card?
Generally no. QCT-registered teachers are usually exempt from needing a separate Blue Card for teaching. You may still need one for some non-teaching roles with children, so check if you coach or volunteer.
How long does provisional registration last in Queensland?
Provisional registration lets you teach while you work toward full registration. Paying the annual fee at the end of year 2 extends it for 2 more years, giving most graduates enough time to meet the Proficient standard.
Can I get my QCT fee reimbursed?
Yes, if you take a job in an eligible rural or remote state school. The Department reimburses the QCT application fee as part of its rural and remote incentives.
Can an overseas teacher register with the QCT?
Yes. Overseas-qualified teachers apply to the QCT with their qualifications and English language evidence. An AITSL skills assessment is only for visas and doesn't give you registration.
Is QCT registration valid in other states?
Not directly, but it helps. Other state regulators grant equivalent registration under mutual recognition when you apply, so moving interstate is usually a paperwork step rather than a new assessment.
