The short answer

To teach in Victoria you need an accredited initial teacher education degree and registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). Teach the Future Fellowships pay $10,000 to STEM, EAL and special education students. Graduates are paid $79,589 now, rising to $92,882 from 1 October 2026 once the new agreement is approved, with back pay.

Victoria is about to have one of the best-paid graduate teacher salaries in Australia. Under VGSA 2026, a graduate on CT 1-1 jumps from $79,589 to $92,882 from 1 October 2026, back-paid once the Fair Work Commission approves the agreement, and to $105,384 by November 2029.

The steps are the same as everywhere else: an accredited degree, registration with the VIT, then a job through School Jobs Vic. What is specific to Victoria is the mix of incentives and paid employment-based pathways.

The steps

  1. 1

    Choose an accredited degree

A 4-year Bachelor of Education, or a 2-year Master of Teaching if you already have a degree. See teaching degrees in Australia.

  2. 2

    Pass LANTITE

The national literacy and numeracy test is required in every initial teacher education course. See LANTITE explained.

  3. 3

    Complete placements

Eligible students can claim the Commonwealth Prac Payment of $338.60 a week in 2026, and Victorian placement grants pay $100 to $200 a day at eligible regional, remote or specialist schools.

  4. 4

    Register with the VIT

Apply for provisional registration: $175.60 for Victorian graduates plus $77.40 for the national criminal history check. See VIT registration.

  5. 5

Apply for jobs on School Jobs Vic

Government school jobs are advertised there. You can also do CRT (relief) work: $425.80 a day under the current Ministerial Order.
