The short answer

Teachers in Victoria must register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). For 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027 the annual fee is $131.30 if paid by 30 September, or $173.10 after that. Initial registration costs $175.60 for Victorian graduates or $203.00 for interstate and overseas teachers, plus $77.40 for a criminal history check.

The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registers every teacher in Victorian government, Catholic and independent schools. Fees for 2026-27 are set by Ministerial Order No. 1514, gazetted on 4 August 2026.

If you haven't renewed yet: the on-time deadline was 30 September 2026, so renewals paid between 1 October and 31 December now cost $173.10 including the late fee.

  4. 4

    Renew every year

Pay the annual fee by 30 September and complete a national criminal history check through the VIT every 4 to 5 years.

Other VIT categories include Experienced returning, Non-practising, Permission to Teach (for schools that can't find a qualified teacher), Casual relief and Dual registration. Pick the one that matches what you actually do; the VIT site explains each.

No separate Working with Children Check

Victoria is unusual: current VIT registration exempts you from needing a Working with Children Check clearance, because the VIT runs its own criminal history checks. Let your registration lapse and you lose that exemption. More detail in Working With Children Checks for teachers.

Interstate, New Zealand and overseas teachers

  • Interstate and NZ teachers apply under mutual recognition (the Mutual Recognition Act 1992 or Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997). Teaching is exempt from automatic deemed registration, so you must apply to the VIT before you teach.
  • Overseas-trained teachers apply with qualifications, transcripts and English evidence. The fee is $203.00. An AITSL skills assessment ($1,198 from 7 September 2026) is for visas only and doesn't register you.
  • To get the Regional Relocation Incentive, interstate and overseas teachers must be VIT registered before they start.

For overseas teachers, see overseas teacher registration by state and the AITSL skills assessment. New to Victoria altogether? Start with becoming a teacher in Victoria.
