The short answer
As at 20 October 2026 (Victoria updated 28 October), three government school systems have a confirmed next rise date: the NT (4.3% from the first full pay period on or after 1 January 2027), Tasmania (3% from the first full pay period in March 2027) and Victoria (4% from 1 November 2027). Victoria's VGSA 2026 was approved by the Fair Work Commission on 16 October 2026, with 2026 rises back-paid. Queensland is in arbitration, and WA, SA and the ACT are bargaining.
- NSW paid its final scheduled 3% from 9 October 2026; nothing further is scheduled before its award expires on 8 October 2027.
- Queensland Catholic staff vote on 4% / 3.5% / 3.5% from 19 to 29 October 2026.
- Victorian Catholic back pay to 10 August depends on an in-principle deal by 15 November 2026.
- NSW independent schools on the AIS agreement get 4% from 1 February 2027.
Every next rise and pay event, in date order
Dates are the first pay period on or after the date unless stated. 'About late March 2027' for SA is our calculation from the agreement's 36-month life. Sources: state data checked 16 Oct 2026, Catholic and independent research checked 17 Oct 2026, and official pages rechecked 20 Oct 2026 (Victoria rechecked 28 Oct 2026; listed below).

Back pay in hand

What this means
From 9 October 2026 you should have been paid $104 more each fortnight. Because the new rates weren't paid yet, the difference builds up and arrives as one back payment: about $505 before tax. After that, your fortnightly take-home goes from $2,723 to $2,794.
Payroll taxes back pay at your marginal rate rather than spreading it, so roughly 32% comes off. That's your actual tax on the money: it doesn't push the rest of your salary into a higher bracket. These are the latest rates already in force: if they are on your payslip, nothing is owed. This shows what you're owed if payroll was late applying them.
Estimate only. Back pay = (new − old) fortnightly pay × fortnights between the two dates, using the pay column in force at the start of each fortnight. Tax uses the ATO marginal-rate method on your annual salary for 2026–27; back pay for an earlier financial year over $1,200 may be taxed differently and is reported as a lump sum E. Old rates: 9 October 2025 column; Crown Employees (Teachers in Schools and Related Employees) Salaries and Conditions Award 2024, verified 16 October 2026.
Victoria: approved, back pay to come
Staff approved the VGSA 2026 with a 93.1% yes vote on 17 September 2026, the Fair Work Commission approved it on 16 October and it came into operation on 23 October 2026. The graduate rate goes from $79,589 to $92,882 and the top classroom step from $118,063 to $133,456, back-paid to 10 August and 1 October 2026, with a $2,000 lump sum. The Department has not published when this reaches payslips. Further rises of 4%, 4% and 4.9% follow each November from 2027. Track it on our VGSA 2026 approval tracker and the Victorian pay rise page.
Queensland: in arbitration
There's no new agreement. Teachers got a 3% QIRC interim rise from 7 September 2026, or the higher award rate (up 4.75% from 1 September 2026), which most classroom teachers get. A graduate now earns $90,164. The Full Bench's final decision has no published date and is expected in late 2026 or 2027. See the QLD arbitration tracker and the Queensland pay rise page.
NSW: last scheduled rise paid
The third and final 3% rise under the 2024 award applied from the first full pay period on or after 9 October 2026: graduate $92,882, top of the classroom scale $133,422 and Highly Accomplished / Lead $141,997. No further rise is scheduled. The award expires on 8 October 2027 and has a no-extra-claims clause until then. See NSW pay rises and our report on the October 2026 rise.
WA: agreement expires 5 December 2026
The last rise under the 2023 General Agreement was 3% from 6 December 2025, taking Level 2.1 to $88,178 and Level 2.9 to $127,737. The agreement expires on 5 December 2026. SSTUWA is asking members to vote on its log of claims, and we found no government offer when we checked. See WA pay rises and WA agreement expiry.
SA: campaign for EA27
The final rise under the 2024 agreement, 3% from 8 May 2026, took Step 1 to $84,971 and Step 9 to $123,236. The agreement nominally expires in about late March 2027. The AEU SA is running its EA27 campaign before formal bargaining; no offer had been made. See SA pay rises and the EA27 campaign.
Tasmania: 3% in March 2027
Under the Teachers Agreement 2025, Tasmanian teachers get 3% from the first full pay period in March 2027 and 2.75% in March 2028. By our calculation that takes the usual graduate step (Band 1 Level 5) from $85,313 to about $87,872 and the top classroom step from $122,393 to about $126,065. See Tasmanian pay rises.
ACT: no rise until a new deal
The 2023–2026 agreement passed its nominal expiry on 31 March 2026. The last rise was 1% plus $1,000 from 4 December 2025 (TL1 $91,396, TL8 $129,106). AEU ACT members rejected a 9% over three years offer on 11 September 2026, and industrial action is continuing. Any back-dating is a bargaining point. See ACT pay rises and ACT teachers reject offer.
NT: 4.3% in January 2027
The third 4.3% rise under the 2024–2027 agreement applies from the first full pay period on or after 1 January 2027: CT1 (graduate) goes from $96,180 to $100,316 and CT9 from $136,997 to $142,888. The agreement runs to 31 December 2027. See NT pay rises and the January 2027 rise.
Catholic and independent schools
- QLD Catholic: ballot from 19 to 29 October 2026 on 4%, 3.5% and 3.5%. The IEU-QNT wants a no vote; employers say there's no back pay if it fails. See the QLD Catholic ballot.
- VIC Catholic (MACS and others): employers have offered rates matching the government scale, back-dated to 10 August 2026 only if in-principle agreement is reached by 15 November 2026 and the FWC approves it. See MACS teacher pay.
- NSW/ACT Catholic systemic: NSW rates rose 3% from 9 October 2026 (graduate $92,882); ACT rates rose 3.5% from 1 August 2026 (graduate $94,596). Nothing more is scheduled before 9 October 2027. See NSW and ACT Catholic systemic pay.
- Catholic Education WA: the agreement reaches nominal expiry on 16 February 2027; no public offer found. See CEWA pay.
- Catholic Education SA: CESA applied to the FWC on 22 September 2026 to put its offer to a vote (3% from May 2025 and May 2026, then matching the government with a 3% minimum). See CESA pay.
- Catholic Education Tasmania: bargaining since August 2026; 19 November is the last chance to settle drafting for a ballot in 2026. See CET pay.
- NSW independent (AIS agreement) and Anglican Schools Corporation: 4% from 1 February 2027, taking Step 1.1 to $97,921 and Step 2.5 to $138,329. See Anglican schools pay.
- Independent schools with no agreement: the Educational Services (Teachers) Award rose 4.75% from 1 July 2026. Award rises are normally set by the Annual Wage Review each year; the 2027 figure isn't known.
